If you feel you are not suitable for this role, AfID has hundreds more accountancy roles available across Africa, Asia and South America from 2 weeks to 6+ months. Subscribe to our Opportunities Email: http://eepurl.com/iqrAE

Our partner is a microfinance institution which provides small, low interest rate loans to allow individuals in Africa to start their own businesses and create their own sustainable livelihoods.

The organisation requires a financial systems consultant to volunteer within the finance department of our head office in Kasungu, Malawi. This position will report directly into both the local finance manager and CEO in Malawi alongside the finance manager based in the UK office.

Fights and accommodation will be provided.

Essential skills:

  • demonstrable experience of working in management accounting or financial management;
  • experience and willingness to contribute collaboratively to an effective team environment;
  • ability to provide training and support to staff

Preferable but not essential:

  • working knowledge of Access database;
  • experience of having worked with other cultures and/or living or working in Africa is desirable but not essential.

Through a number of distinct projects, the successful candidate will strengthen and improve the efficiency of the existing processes and procedures currently in place within the finance department, ensuring that all risks are mitigated through the implementation of relevant controls.

Key Responsibilities:

Project 1: Sage setup completion – Sage 200 has recently been implemented in the finance department, and the volunteer would work with the Malawi finance manager to provide sufficient levels of support and training to the finance team to ensure staff understand how to undertake their accounting processes on the new system and how they can amend and improve their existing policies and procedures to make the greatest efficiency gains from using the new system. Successful completion of this project will result in full data transfer to Sage 200 from the existing Quickbooks system and the switchover of everyday use.

Project 2: the organisation has a new piece of software which sits within Sage and will automatically import transactions into Sage from the Access database. The in-country testing of this software together with the development of the procedures and controls around using the software need to be developed by the volunteer so that the finance and operations teams can switch to using this software in place of the existing manual process.

Project 3: Finance department process improvement – working with the finance manager in Malawi and the UK the successful candidate will, in addition to utilising the greater functionality in Sage, work with, train and mentor the finance team to identify and address where financial controls can be strengthened and made more transparent and where procedures can be improved to make more effective and efficient use of staff time.
