Our partner is a large international charity focused on improving healthcare in the developing world. Through its delivery of healthcare, training, advocacy and research, the organisation works worldwide to bring the benefits of modern medicine to those most in need.

A volunteer Financial Analyst is required for the organisation’s Country Office in Malawi for a minimum of 9 months, ideally 12. Flights, accommodation and a stipend will be provided.

Role in Malawi

The volunteer Financial Analyst will participate in the management of financial operations and donor required reporting. The FA will play a crucial role in developing an efficient Finance Team as he or she expands the department’s capacity to take on new, vital functions. This individual will work with national staff to provide technical assistance and guidance in areas of accounting and financial management as well as liaise with headquarters on areas of reporting.

Responsibilities include:

Accounting and financial reporting

Prepare complex journal entries when needed and coach Finance staff in preparation of journal entries and creation of account reconciliations

Review staff’s journal entries and review staff’s reconciliations as part of the monthly close process

Provide technical accounting support, training and assistance to Finance staff

Identify any areas for improvement in financial process and procedures and lead the initiation of appropriate changes

Liaise with headquarters on issues relating to financial reporting as well as donor regulated reporting

Inventory management

Manage the transition from Excel based inventory management system to Serenic Navigator accounting software Inventory Management system.

Liaise with headquarters and local IT team on trouble shooting and resolving any functionality issues.

Train new staff to use the Serenic Navigator system

Employee loan program

Provide training to national staff members on loans including the effects of interest, proper financial planning and wise investments of principal

Review employee loan applications

Create the loan amortization tables and ensure that loan payments are made appropriately

Manage revolving loan fund and make recommendations for future loan offerings

Internal audit

Test the implementation and effectiveness of controls for the Procurement, Warehouse and Infrastructure Departments

Provide support to the Risk Assessment Officer in assessing the control environment of program departments, identifying areas for improvement, designing controls to address areas for improvement, building procedures and training program managers to implement controls 

Skills and Qualifications:

·  Bachelor’s degree required; an Accounting or Finance related degree is preferred but not essential if post-bac or professional certification demonstrates relevant training and experience

·  Minimum of 3 years of experience in a similar role or in public accounting required; experience with an international non-profit/NGO is an advantage

·  Accounting certification is an advantage (CPA, CMA, CA, ACCA, ACMA or equivalent)

·  Experience in internal audit or in testing the design and implementation of internal controls

·  Strong written/verbal communication and interpersonal skills

·  Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.

·   Experience with Serenic Navigator accounting system is an advantage

·  Willingness to travel to remote parts of the district with limited degree of infrastructure development

·  Ability to communicate with diverse groups, maintain strict confidentiality, meet deadlines and schedules, set priorities, and work with detailed information/data

·  Ability to work well in a dynamic team environment alongside health workers, senior management team, support staff, and patients

·   Willingness to live and work full-time in a rural setting

·   Strong sense of humor is helpful and desired
