Our new partner in El Salvador teaches subsistence farming families to improve their environment and adapt to climate change. The organisation supports farmers' self-sufficiency and food security by implementing sustainable agriculture practices, as well as strengthening community organisation. Our partner uses a mix of traditional knowledge and modern science to achieve its goal.

The organisation’s programmes include:

  • Supporting rural communities to organise and develop their leadership and ecological awareness
  • Promoting permaculture thinking and teaching simple solutions to help communities to restore their damaged ecosystems and become more self-reliant
  • Designing and developing an education centre to experiment with and demonstrate permaculture and sustainable living techniques
  • Building local networks to prepare for the upheavals of climate change

First volunteer on placement:

Your role would be akin to conducting an internal audit – understanding the structure of the organisation, assessing its existing financial procedures and controls, and making recommendations/ implementing changes which you deem necessary. Your assessment and reports will form the basis of future AfID assignments. The organisation has hired a new accountant and is looking for someone to train her in day-to-day accounting as well as interpreting financial information to make business decisions. The accountant only speaks Spanish, so we are looking for fluent Spanish speakers for this role.

The organisation has recently gained national and UN recognition, is looking to expand, and may be in line for UN funding.

Please bear in mind that if you feel this role is not quite right for you, we have hundreds more opportunities across Africa, Asia and South America. Assignments can last from 2 weeks to 12+ months.

Accounting for International Development (AfID) arranges tailored voluntary placements for accountants in overseas charities such as orphanages, microfinance institutions, health centres, rural schools and International NGOs.
