AfID has an exciting opportunity for an accountant to work with one of our Ugandan charity partners. Based in Patongo, a rural area far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life, this is a fantastic chance to escape the overcrowded, corporate lifestyle for a few months.

The organisation works in northern Uganda to rebuild the lives of victims of war and strengthen a new town through economic training and psychological support. The charity’s programmes include:

-Counselling 28 outreach groups, each comprising 30 members (840 beneficiaries)

-Drop-in counselling centre

-Referral system

-HIV focused counselling at Health Centre in Patongo – 300 beneficiaries on average a week

-Village Savings and Loans training and education

-Gender Based Violence education

-Family Planning training and education

-Poultry farm

-Managing 5 agricultural demonstration gardens

The work of our partner is incredibly valuable with 840 direct beneficiaries and 4200 indirect beneficiaries.

As the first volunteer accountant to join the charity, you would be required to perform the following role in a unique setting deep in the heart of rural Africa:

The role would be akin to conducting an internal audit – understanding the structure of the organisation, assessing its existing financial procedures and controls, and making recommendations/ implementing changes deemed necessary. The assessment and reports will form the basis of future AfID assignments.

If you are interested in volunteering but find yourself unavailable for this specific role, please do get in touch as we offer a range of volunteering opportunities that can be customised and tailored to your skills and availability.

Accounting for International Development (AfID) arranges tailored voluntary placements for accountants in overseas charities such as orphanages, microfinance institutions, health centres, rural schools and International NGOs.
