Accounting for International Development (AfID) arranges customisable voluntary placements tailor-made to fit your availability, skills and preferences. We are now supporting more than 150 charities and NGOs across 28 countries and we desperately need the assistance of more volunteer accountants to coach and mentor some amazing local people.

Our partner, founded in 2010, is the first animal welfare charity In Malawi. The programme is geared around providing veterinary care and support for vulnerable animals; creating awareness about animal welfare issues, both for domestic and farm animals; and improving and supporting the enforcement of legislation by local authorities.

Our partner currently has two members of staff working in the finance team: One is responsible for cash management, whilst the other is responsible for everything else pertinent to accounting. More recently, they decided to move from an Excel-based accounting system to Sage.

You will be the first volunteer on assignment at our partner. Your role would be akin to conducting an internal audit – understanding the structure of the organisation, assessing its existing financial procedures and controls, and making recommendations / implementing changes that you deem necessary. As the first volunteer, one of your key responsibilities will be to determine in what scope AfID continues to work with the partner organisation. It will require some flexibility and sensitivity on your part as your assignment will introduce AfID’s programme to the partner and will provide us with accurate financial information about them.

Your assessment and reports will form the basis of future AfID assignments. They appear to have had some teething issues around Sage, and would benefit from an understanding on how best to set up their accounts on the system.

Additionally, they are looking for support in apportioning donor costs, understanding how much funding (from individual donors) is remaining, and extracting reports from Sage. There is a lot to be done; that said, you are not expected to deal with all the issues. Rather, once you have undertaken a thorough assessment of their accounting function and made recommendations for improvement, you can focus on a few key items and prepare a more detailed brief for another AfID volunteer to follow on from.

This role has a flexible start and would last for between 3 -5 weeks.
