AfID is looking for three or four volunteer Internal Auditor for its partner, which is headquartered in London. Its goal is to help young people overcome the limitations imposed by challenging social issues including poverty, homelessness, war, violence, drug abuse, discrimination and AIDS.

To do this our partner supports and assists a worldwide programme of sports related community projects that have been working to educate children, protect the vulnerable from illness and even bring people from divided communities together in friendship.  

The role:

The role is to carry out an independent, risk based appraisal of the effectiveness of the policies, procedures and standards by which the National Foundations of our partner manage their financial, physical and information resources and to provide assurances to Management and Trustees on the same.   The Internal Auditor’s remit may, on occasion, extend to all areas but will normally be focused on financial probity, restricted fund-raising and the effective functioning of systems for key performance indicators, risk management and organisational and infrastructure support of each Foundation   

Key Responsibilities:

The post involves travel to National Foundation offices in either: ·        
  • Argentina and USA;
  • South Africa;
  • Germany and Switzerland;
  • Spain, Italy and Netherlands.  

You will be travelling to each country for approximately 7 days.

Your main duty will be to carry out the following:  

  • Review the effectiveness of risk management and governance processes, identifying key controls that need to be continually reported on through the risk profile and assist Management in identifying and dealing with any gaps or weaknesses in existing controls.
  • Monitor and report to the Trustees on Management’s actions to address and mitigate risks identified.
  • To provide a report for Management and Trustees on each audit, grading risks / recommendations in order of importance, obtaining and incorporating Management’s responses
  • To suggest upgraded risk management processes to be included in General Rules for National Licensees.


  • A recognized professional qualification (e.g. IIA, ACA, CIMA) which implies a thorough knowledge of the principles, procedures and practices of accounting and financial records and transactions and experience of using accounts systems.  

Required Experience:

  • Experience of internal audit or other finance functions within a charity or similar organisation.
  • At least five years’ experience (post qualification)

Technical skills:

  • A thorough knowledge of audit procedures, including planning, techniques and tests and sampling methods involved in conducting audits.
  • Tenacity and independence of thought and judgement.
  • Demonstrable skill and experience in gathering, analyzing and evaluating facts and in being able to craft prioritized and practical recommendations to Management.  

This role is a great opportunity for an experienced accountant to travel. All costs and travel are covered by AfID’s partner. Ideally the candidate will be available to start in November, although this is flexible.
