About us

Action Tutoring is an exciting educational charity, offering the opportunity to volunteer for an hour a week for 8 weeks in an inner city London school, helping a pupil to prepare for their GCSE exams in either English or Maths.

Action Tutoring work with pupils on the D/C borderline in these subjects, aiming to help them achieve at least a C grade or above, to increase their chances of going on to further education, employment or training.Action Tutoring was founded in March 2011, by Susannah Clark, aiming to make the benefits of one to one, private tuition accessible to pupils across London who wouldn't otherwise afford it, at a crucial stage in their education.

Why are we exciting?

Working with inner city schools has it's challenges, but the work is always rewarding and usually blows people's pre-conceived ideas about inner city schools out of the water! Action Tutoring is a new charity and has been growing very rapidly: from 2 schools in March 2011, to 30 today. Come and join us on the next exciting stage of our growth!

What can we offer Escapees?

We can offer a low commitment and easy way to begin to step outside the boundaries of the corporate world. If you're thinking about a career move it's a good way to try something different out and it's a great way to give back to society. It's usually rewarding and enjoyable too! We work with schools across London and will place you in one convenient to you.

Our values

We don't believe exam results are the be all and end all in life but we do believe that getting 5 good GCSEs including English and Maths is crucial to a young person getting on to further education, employment or training. Sadly, many don't achieve this benchmark. Furthermore, we believe a good education and opportunities should be available to all. The huge growth of the private tutoring industry is only widening the educational achievement gap and we're seeking to combat this, making the benefits of tuition more widely available. We highly value enthusiasm, passion and commitment from our volunteers and can offer a rewarding experience in return!

Practicalities

We're looking for people to volunteer for just an hour a week for 8 weeks, during the autumn, spring and summer terms.

We provide training, resources and can arrange CRB checks.

All tuition takes place at the school and we work with 30 around London - we'll place you in one that's most convenient for you.

Most tuition takes place in the morning or straight after school with some sessions later in the afternoon or on Saturday's.
