Big Beyond are looking to fill two adventurous and rewarding positions for their volunteer site in Uganda - Bigger Picture Project Manager and Volunteer Experience Manager. Both offer the chance to relocate to a rural community on the edge of beautiful Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwest Uganda. Our volunteers support the Big Beyond Foundation to execute long-term conservation and development objectives.

Uganda Volunteer Experience Manager

You will be responsible for the all-round happiness of volunteers throughout their placements, in their house and living in the local community! Volunteers are accommodated in one of our two volunteer houses and we provide a full-board service. Although we’re not five star, we want to make it as top-notch as possible by being creative, resourceful and having excellent attention to detail.

Resources are fairly limited here and it’s new to most people... no electricity, running water, well-stocked shops and we’re remote... and everyone on our lovely team is recruited from the local community so ongoing training and guidance is definitely required as they learn what the foreigner needs and likes.

The team of volunteers will be diverse with a range of nationalities, ages and backgrounds. Luckily we tend to attract very inspiring and motivated individuals, and you will be responsible for maintaining a positive vibe amongst the team and helping them make the most out of their experience with us in Africa from both a work and leisure perspective. We’ve got them off the beaten path and we want to support them in embracing it.

You will be in charge of managing accommodation and food, coordinating project logistics, briefing volunteers and monitoring feedback, helping to identify appropriate placements, managing some of the budgets and helping the volunteers integrate into the community and enjoy life outside their volunteer work as well. You will work closely with the marketing department and admin side of our volunteer recruitment such as supporting social media activities to communicate life here to the outside world. You will also work very closely with the Bigger Picture Programme Manager to support their various duties and to ensure each placement element is positively contributing to the overall volunteer experience.

You will need to enjoy maintaining a good team spirit and building strong ethics amongst Big Beyond representatives. The role requires confidence in networking, the knack to lead group meetings and the ability to radiate positive energy. You need to be a natural leader, personable and approachable, enjoy working with different personalities and have a passion for inspiring people to turn off their iPads and experience this amazing place!

  • Oversee volunteer placements and coordinate weekly schedules
  • Coordinate regular project feedback from volunteers and produce weekly reports
  • Manage the hospitality aspect of volunteers’ experience and manage and train the local team
  • Design the weekly menu and coordinate stock
  • Manage the maintenance and development of our volunteer accommodation sites
  • Build a positive reputation for Big Beyond in-country and globally through supporting the marketing department in gathering content and supporting social media activities
  • Conduct arrival and exit interviews with volunteers
  • Occasionally accompany volunteers on placement tasks
  • Represent Big Beyond in community and government meetings
  • Work closely with the Programme Manager in delivering well-organised skills-based volunteer experiences, producing maximum local benefit and communications amongst the local community
  • Building itineraries and activities for evenings and weekends
  • Developing a local calendar of events and integrating volunteers into the local community
  • Help run and innovate the orientation programme for new volunteers and introducing them into their new community
  • Address any complaints with efficiency
  • Ensure happy and productive volunteers at all times!

Essential skills and characteristics:

  • Volunteer experience isn’t essential, although experience of Africa is beneficial
  • Excellent people management skills
  • Self-motivated, flexible, independent, adaptable and adventurous
  • You definitely love socialising with different types of people
  • An excellent communicator and a natural leader
  • The ability to respect and work with different cultures
  • Good organisational and management skills
  • Positive and ambitious
  • Reliable and hard-working
  • Attention to detail
  • Enjoy cooking (you’re not the chef but would inspire and teach the cooks new dishes) and being creative with fairly limited ingredients!
  • Be a good listener and an astute member of the team managing volunteer sentiment
