Market Analysis and Research Position

Big Society Capital (BSC) is the world’s first social investment wholesale company. BSC has a vision of a sustainable UK social investment market that finances new business models and approaches to tackling entrenched social problems.  BSC will work towards this vision through investing up to £600m of its own capital base and by acting as a champion of the market in general. BSC has been operational since April 2012.

A clear understanding of the social investment market is obviously at the core of BSC’s activities. BSC needs to understand what the market looks like at any given time – in terms of the investors, intermediaries and front-line social ventures involved as well as the actual transactions taking place. BSC also needs to develop a clear picture for where the market could and should be in the future. It is not just a question of market research and analysis – but also of building infrastructure, data systems and reporting apparatus, which will often require close work with BSC’s partners. Improving BSC’s understanding of the social investment market will be critical to shaping BSC’s investment and overall strategy.

Job description

BSC is looking to recruit a high calibre individual to build and deliver BSC’s market analysis and research capabilities. This is an exciting chance to work at the heart of a globally unique organisation as it begins its second full year of operations

Responsibilities will include:

-  Develop and maintain ‘state of social investment market’ dashboard for internal and possibly external use

-  Scan for, review and internalise third party research and datasets into social investment market

-  Mine BSC’s internal investment data and shape investment reporting systems and requirements

-  Encourage the wider social investment market to create and build appropriate data systems, reporting standards and data repositories

-  Develop and coordinate overall BSC research portfolio, and budget. This will involve identifying gaps in existing research, scoping new research projects, overseeing and quality-assuring commissioned work. It will also involve building and strengthening relationships with BSC’s research collaborators (e.g. City of London Corporation)

-  Undertake in-house research and analysis as required

-  Draw inferences from all of the above to inform BSC strategy and activities

The position will involve close working with other members of BSC’s Strategy and Market Development team, and more widely in BSC including with the investment and impact teams.

The position will report to BSC’s Head of Strategy and Market Development.

Candidate requirements - essential skills and likely profile

Requirements for successful candidates include:

-   demonstrable skills in analysing financial markets, particularly nascent asset classes, e.g. VC, microfinance, green tech

-   experience in managing a mid-sized research portfolio preferable

-   strong quantitative skills

-   ability to build forecasting models (e.g. in Excel)

-   ability to analyse data/surveys (SPSS, STATA)

-   strong presentational skills – e.g. the ability to produce high-quality    written and powerpoint reports

-   collaborative in style – able to work across BSC teams and with BSC’s external partners

-    understanding of social policy and the social sectors within which UK social enterprises and charities are currently most active in

The likely profile is for someone with experience of analysing financial markets and nascent asset classes. They might have a background in a financial services or consultancy firm, and/or development finance or research institute setting.

Experience in the social investment market in the UK, or impact investment more generally, is advantageous although not essential.

Candidates are also expected to have a stellar academic record, and a personal passion and commitment to growing the social investment market and to BSC’s mission.
