BSC is looking for a Social Impact Director to develop and implement Big Society Capital’s best practice work in evidencing and monitoring social impact in the social investment market-place by co-ordinating BSC’s collective impact efforts across a diverse range of stakeholders.  The individual will be responsible for implementing BSC’s social impact best practice guide and social outcomes framework and will build on BSC’s impact outreach efforts.  This will involve engaging across the social sector as well as the social investment ecosystem including social investors, influencers, central government, commissioners and local authorities.


This is an exciting chance to work at the heart of a globally unique organisation, and drive the establishment of evidencing social value as central to social investment market.


Responsibilities will include:

-          Devise BSC’s external social impact engagement strategy

-          Work closely with social investors to help them incorporate BSC’s outcomes matrix and best practice into their social investment strategies and performance monitoring plans

-          Work with the social sector to advance a bottom-up, collaborative and open source approach to impact measurement; engaging social sector organisations in evidencing and monitoring social impact and gathering feedback to help develop BSC’s impact strategy

-          Represent BSC’s social impact strategy at conferences, roundtables and events;

-          Co-ordinate the implementation of the BSC outcomes matrix across the Cabinet Office, central government departments, commissioners and local authorities

-          Develop and maintain effective relationships and continue to expand BSC’s networks across stakeholder groups and influencer organisations

-          Co-ordinate social impact evidence and monitoring best practice; actively promoting and monitoring BSC’s social outcomes matrix based on stakeholder feed-back.

The position will involve close working with other members of BSC’s Social Impact Team and more widely in BSC with the investment and strategy teams.


The position will report to BSC’s Chief Operating Officer


Candidate requirements - essential skills and likely profile


Requirements for successful candidates include:

-          Proven interest or knowledge of evidencing social impact and effective monitoring and reporting of social outcomes

-          4-5 years’ experience in a relevant field such as social/public policy development or social investment/social enterprise

-          understanding of social policy and the social sectors within which UK social enterprises and charities are currently most active in

-          strong programme delivery skills

o   ability to create delivery plans

o   ability to implement against delivery plans

-          strong presentational skills – e.g. the ability to produce and deliver high-quality, engaging oral presentations

-          collaborative in style – able to work across BSC teams and with BSC’s external partners

Experience in the social impact market in the UK, or social investment more generally, is essential.


Candidates are also expected to have a strong academic record, and a personal passion and commitment to growing the social investment market and to BSC’s mission.
