Big Society Capital was established to develop and shape the social investment market in the UK. Launched by the Prime Minister in April 2012, it has capital of up to £600 million (to be paid-in over five years) from dormant bank accounts and an equity investment by the four largest UK high street banks.

Social sector organisations that tackle some of the UK’s most intractable social problems can lack access to the finance they need to grow. The role of Big Society Capital is to develop sources of this financing by investing its capital and acting as market champion. 

Currently, a total of around £150 million of investment commitments have been made which will be matched by co-investment.


Overall Purpose of the Role:

This position ensures the efficient and effective management of Big Society Capital’s finances and compliance with statutory requirements.

The position reports to the CFO and manages the Finance team. Internal Contacts The Finance team consists of the CFO, Financial Controller, Management Accountant and Office Assistant (who works part-time in Finance). Extensive contact with all members staff, particularly the Executive Committee, Investment team and Operations team. External Contacts Auditors, HMRC, board members, shareholders, investees


Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain and develop accurate accounting system and records, with adequate financial controls
  • Maintain and develop processes for the valuation and financial monitoring of Big Society Capital’s social investment portfolio
  • Manage the month end process, including reporting to the FCA
  • Cash management, including monitoring the company’s treasury portfolio
  • Manage the company’s tax affairs
  • Prepare statutory accounts, including group consolidation
  • Prepare annual budgets and forecasts
  • Manage the share subscription process Minimum Qualifications/ Experience
  • Qualified accountant
  • Experience of working within investment management or financial services 
  • Strong IT skills, particularly Excel Personal requirements
  • Demonstrates excellent financial and numerical awareness: fully conversant with financial accounts and accounting procedures
  • Analytical with excellent attention to detail
  • Flexible and willing to take on different tasks as required
  • Superior judgment, discretion and utmost integrity
  • Exceptional planning and organisational skills
  • Assertive
  • Ability to work on own initiative, with minimal support;
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills, including ability to influence others and prepare clear reports
