Our client is a registered charity dedicated to supporting children who have withdrawn from the school system as a result of severe bullying or have suffered a major trauma.  Red Balloon runs four ‘learner centres’ providing a protected environment where children receive education and pastoral care, as well as an opportunity to socialise in a safe place.  It also operates "Red Balloon of the Air’ which provides a sophisticated, virtual-learning scheme for children who may not live locally to a centre.

Red Balloon is committed to supporting more of the estimated 16,000 children impacted by bullying and in order to do so has recognised the need for a new CEO to help deliver their vision. The new CEO will create a strategy and build a fit-for-purpose structure which ensures financial security and sustainability within the next three years.

The Role
  • Conduct a detailed review of Red Balloon before developing a growth strategy for the future which encompasses HR and people, finance, IT, marketing and communications, and fund raising;
  • Develop and execute a plan which will ‘operationalise’ the entity and ensure solid working practices, whilst being cognizant of its current operating environment and the success it has had to date;
  • Build on the existing strengths within the team and lead people through a period of significant transformation;
  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders such as Local Education Authorities, Trustees and Government Ministers;
  • Leverage the future potential for Red Balloon of the Air and help devise and roll out a growth strategy.

Working closely with the founder and existing Board of Trustees, the ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in growing a business in a commercial position, with full P&L accountabilities;
  • Proven commercial awareness coupled with a sensitive approach and alignment to the charity’s ambitions;
  • Strategic oversight combined with a willingness to get involved at a grass-roots level;
  • Outstanding emotional intelligence and a proven track record of influencing and building strong stakeholder relationships;
  • Strong leadership skills and experience of leading a team through a period of change;
  • Experience in a related sector i.e. education/educational software/charity, would be helpful but is absolutely not essential.
