CardinalStone Partners is a full-service investment banking firm providing services in financial advisory, capital raising and investment management to a diverse base of investors and business owners with strong interest in Nigeria and the broader West African economic region. We believe that Africa is the next frontier for growth in the global investment landscape, and that Nigeria will play a key role in driving this agenda.

Within the Principal Investments Division (PID), our focus is on building industry-leading businesses across key growth sectors of the Nigerian economy. Today, CardinalStone PID is actively managing investments in the mining and oil & gas services sectors, in advanced stages of incubating an integrated agribusiness venture, and currently exploring additional opportunities in the FMCG, healthcare and real estate sectors.

Benefits to Candidates

  • Opportunity to experience the West African business environment from the perspective of a professionally run, indigenous firm operating with global best-practices in the Nigerian market
  • An immersive exploratory experience in private equity with one of Nigeria's premier boutique financial services firms
  • Exposure to CardinalStone's unique investing philosophy: long-term, hands-on investing with a focus on cashflow expansion through heavy management and operational involvement
  • Opportunity to begin developing a deep network among West Africa's business leaders
  • A competitive compensation package structured to offer a comfortable Africa experience: accommodation, means of transportation & monthly stipend provided for duration of program

Job Description

CardinalStone PID runs a year round fellowship/internship program to attract experienced young professionals with strong management consulting, strategic management or investment banking experience to participate as integral members of our deal team. Each fellow/intern will work on developing and executing a new investment thesis, while also managing one of our existing portfolio companies. This role provides direct guidance from seasoned senior management, but is also an opportunity to take on significant responsibility in executing investments.

Some of the responsibilities will include

  • Opportunity Screening and Thesis Development: We take a structured approach to exploring new business opportunities – both as strategic opportunities for our current portfolio companies, and in new sectors entirely.  You will work on developing a new investment thesis, and might do some additional screening of opportunities that come our way
  • Investment Structuring and Due Diligence: Depending on the cycle of deals at a given point, you will take a leadership role in proposing deal structure given the firm’s investment considerations. In addition, if there is due diligence required for one of the investment opportunities under consideration, you will lead this as well
  • Portfolio Company Monitoring and Oversight: A significant differentiator in our approach to investing is our level of involvement in our portfolio companies. We are hands on investors, and you will have a very entrepreneurial role as you work closely with company management to guide operations at the companies

 The ideal candidate will have

  • Bachelors degree with superior academic performance from a top tier university
  • 2 to 3 years analyst experience in a management consulting role with a top tier consulting firm preferred; or investment banking experience with a bulge bracket firm or general management/strategy role
  • Strong financial modelling, exceptional analytical and critical reasoning skills, and strong presentation skills
  • An  interest in exploring or making a transition to entrepreneurship, private equity or principal investing in emerging markets or sub-Saharan Africa

While not required, previous emerging markets experience will be an advantage.
