The Operations / Projects Manager will be responsible for the management, coordination and evaluation of one or more Challenge Partners national projects, as well as some of the core operational functions involved with running the charity. They must work to understand the schools’ and teachers’ requirements, ensuring that they are met, whilst also ensuring that the projects are completed on time and to the required quality. They will manage a small team and a budget of £0.5 - £1m and work closely with the Managing Director.

We have a number of key projects including:

  • Raising the Bar: identifying and then sharing the latest research and best practice in literacy and numeracy, working with both schools and universities.
  • Quality Assurance Review: a peer review programme where schools review each other, which lays the foundation for considerable improvement through school collaboration.
  • Challenge the Gap: closing the attainment gap between low-income children and their peers by facilitating schools working together and learning from each other.

Key Responsibilities


The Operations / Projects Manager will report to the Managing Director and their duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Project management for all aspects of the development and implementation of assigned projects from initiation to closure;
  • Working closely with the Challenge Partners lead schools to establish the scope, goals for the project, along with the required deliverables, resources, budget and timings;
  • Liaising and maintaining strong relationships with the schools and other stakeholders to ensure effective on-going implementation;
  • Developing and monitoring project progress on an operational project plan, creating operational systems and processes.
  • Developing and implementing an approach to evaluating the effectiveness and impact of the project based on project aims;
  • Managing budgets and ensuring financial systems are followed;
  • Lead, coach, and mentor project team members on a proactive basis.


You do not need to have worked with schools before, although you should have an interest in education, be enthusiastic and committed to top-notch delivery.
