Our partner organisation is a training centre in the town of Choma, Zambia. Due to poor health or poverty, many vulnerable youths and adults do not receive a full education and youth unemployment is as high as 80% in some regions. The centre was set up to offer support to those who struggle to find work due to their lack of education by providing access to trade skills education on a year-long scheme which gives participants a recognised qualification and a trade. They also offer a 6-month computer course for more literate students. The centre can cater for up to 70 students but has little physical space to expand courses on its present site.
A carpentry production unit has been set up on their premises which provides employment for some of the students once they complete their carpentry course. The profits from this unit supplement the tuition fees of vulnerable youths who apply for trade skills courses. However, this unit is currently not making a profit. The centre also have an extensive expansion planned on a new site, which is delayed at present until the college can increase its efficiency and profitability in existing areas.
The volunteer’s role will be to help develop the business skills in the core management team, including more effective production and marketing skills, as well as advice in setting income-generation projects and producing business and strategic plans.
Working with the production manager and staff, the volunteer will aim to increase profitability in the production unit. The volunteer will also be asked to look at the centre’s business systems and assist the principal in their development, pinpoint areas for development and develop business plans for new income-generating projects.
Business qualifications at degree level and /or a proven history of successful business management are essential. The ideal candidate should also be innovative and have a working knowledge of business planning.
Experience of start-up businesses and effective production systems for small-scale enterprises would also be an advantage. Given the locality of this work, the volunteer should also be an excellent communicator who is patient, open-minded and flexible.
Please note that this is a voluntary position. Although accommodation will be provided by our partner organisation, volunteers will be required to raise some funds to cover their flights and time overseas.
