Developing Technologies is an innovative charity that aims to alleviate poverty in Africa by developing and introducing appropriate technologies on a sustainable basis. We work with students at City University and Imperial College, London, graduate volunteers and local partners in Africa. At present we have exciting and challenging projects in Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Zambia.

Volunteer Technical Assistant for well-drilling project in Sierra Leone

DT has developed a low-cost drilling technology for water wells and has been testing this in Sierra Leone for a number of years. The volunteer is required to complete a contract to install wells for a RSPB conservation project in the Gola Forest

ABOUT
The volunteer will initially be located in Kenema for about a month to carry out essential maintenance of the drilling equipment and then move to the Gola Forest site to complete the wells for the RSPB contract. This will involve supervision of the drilling team, monitoring of the drilling and solving problems as they occur.

The volunteer will also be required to supervise the installation of pumps for the wells and to liaise closely with the client’s local team. On completion of the wells it is envisaged that the volunteer will spend some time exploring the possibilities for wider use of the DT drilling technology in Sierra Leone, both with RSPB and other potential partners.

Skills and experience needed:
Applicants should be graduates in Engineering or a similar discipline and have an interest in development. Good problem solving and practical skills are essential to deal with problems and to ensure maintenance and repair work is carried out to a good standard.

The work is very challenging and will require both good technical and managerial skills. In particular the volunteer will be required to live on-site with limited home comforts and access to communications and therefore to be self-reliant and able to make on-the-spot decisions.

The Gola Forest in south eastern Sierra Leone is a place of unparalleled natural beauty, yet the people living in the local area are some of the poorest in the world. Previous volunteers who have gone to this region have noted how personally enriching is the experience. Please note that all expenses are covered.
