Employer: Indigenous Education Foundation of Tanzania (IEFT)

 

IEFT is a non profit organization that runs a secondary school in rural Tanzania. The organization’s mission is to prepare youth to become inspired leaders, empowered to make a positive change in their communities through quality education.

The school maintains agriculture projects- a garden, chickens and bees (with a desire to expand!) to enhance the students’ agricultural education and after school activities. We are looking for a manager to organize and implement the agriculture projects.

Position Qualifications:

- Experience gardening, especially garden management and planning

- Experience raising and caring for animals and livestock (chickens, bees, goats)

- Ability to be creative in a work environment with few resources and a small budget

- Ability to live simply abroad without running water or consistent internet

- Ability to thrive in a communal living situation with coworkers

- An appreciation of and desire to learn about new cultures

- Experience working with high school ages students, especially classroom experience

Position Responsibilities:

-  Plan and implement a garden schedule: prepping, planting, weeding, thinning, harvesting, etc.

-  Mange and care for flock of chickens and honey bee hives

-  Manage eggs, produce and honey as they are available, some will be used for school cooking and some will be sold

-  Involve students in the projects through an Agriculture Club during the school’s weekly club time and after school whenever possible

-  Work with the school’s agriculture teacher inside and outside the classroom to use the agriculture projects as an educational enhancement

-  Help expand and enhance our agriculture projects as much as possible!

-  Engage with the students and the community to learn as much as you can!

Date of Employment: Hiring Immediately. Looking for 1 year commitment minimum two  year commitment preferred.

Compensation:

There is no fee for volunteering with IEFT/Orkeeswa School. All volunteers are provided with shared housing and utilities. Volunteers committed to at least a one year term are provided with a monthly living stipend to help cover costs of food, etc. Volunteers are expected to cover their own expenses to get to Tanzania, including round trip airfare and the required Visa fees ($850 USD).
