Teach English in a remote East African village and empower marginalized children with education. Explore Tanzania and experience life in a traditional Maasai community. IEFT has an open position for a volunteer English teacher starting as soon as possible.

IEFT is a registered non-profit organization that collaborates with rural communities in northern Tanzania to provide quality, affordable secondary education to indigenous children. IEFT operates the Orkeeswa Secondary School which is populated by motivated students and an upbeat and welcoming staff. Come join IEFT's team and make a difference in the lives of children in a remote part of East Africa!

Job Description:

IEFT is looking for an enthusiastic educator to volunteer as an English teacher at Orkeeswa. Ideally we are looking for someone with High School ESL teaching experience who can understand the challenges of teaching to an exam driven curriculum while at the same developing students’ wider skills and understandings. They will be learning English as a third language having learned to speak their local language at home and Kiswahili at Primary School.

You must be able to:

•   Teach Form I through Form IV in an EFL context.

•   Develop lesson plans and teaching resources which both support and enrich the delivery of the National Curriculum

•   Initiate after-school projects designed to provide hands-on learning, as well as leading extra-curricular activities.

•   Work independently and collaborate with a team of international volunteers and local staff.

•   Show the willingness and ability to be flexible and to cope with challenging living and working conditions in a developing country.

•   Live and work with little or no running water, unreliable electricity and a lack of Western amenities.

Qualifications:

•   Hold a relevant bachelor's degree and ESL teaching qualification

•   Have experience teaching ESL in a classroom

•   A minimum one-year commitment, starting as soon as possible is preferred

By working together with IEFT staff and volunteers, you will benefit from a real sense of global solidarity, lasting friendships, and the life changing impact of a unique and meaningful experience. You will gain a deeper insight into a different culture and experience things that broaden your perspectives.

Volunteers and staff have the freedom and flexibility to explore some of East Africa's treasures, including safaris on the Serengeti Plain, climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, hiking the Ngorongoro Crater, or relaxing on the beaches of Zanzibar Island. Experience Tanzania's diverse indigenous cultures and traditions, distinct wildlife and breathtaking scenery!

There is no program fee to volunteer with IEFT, however candidates are required to cover their own expenses to get to Tanzania and while living in Tanzania, including round-trip airfare, the required Visa fees ($850 USD) and regular living expenses (food, travel, etc.). Volunteers that commit to at least one year are eligible for our stipend program; please inquire for more details. All volunteers are provided with shared housing.
