A Story

For many girls in India reaching 8th grade is a luxury and training to become a teacher is a faraway dream. India is the country with the largest illiterate population on earth. Women and girls are specially affected; girls are kept at home to work or sent into early marriage. Nearly two thirds of the girls are married under a legal age: Poverty but more importantly cultural and social barriers are causing this problem.

In 2007 Educate Girls was founded, driven by the belief that this needs to change. Educate Girls mobilizes communities, addresses attitudes that prevent girls from going to school and introduces infrastructure, like separate toilets, so schools are seen as a worthwhile place for girls. Last year they managed to provide access to education to around 300’000 girls and improve their lives significantly.

One of the organizations, supporting Educate Girls to expand their model to reach a higher number of girls is LGT Venture Philanthropy (LGT VP). We are an impact investor, supporting social organizations in order to increase quality of life of less advantaged people.

Why we are doing this?

In developing countries the scale of poverty is alarming and the need for help is great. Over four billion people live on less than USD 2 per day. We have an economic, political and moral responsibility to champion the cause of disadvantaged people. That's why we engage with social organizations in order to help them grow their proven solutions to reach more less advantaged people.

About us

We are an impact investor, supporting social organizations with outstanding social and environmental impact, through financial capital, know-how and networks. Our financial support is offered in forms of grants, loans and equity investments. In the example of Educate Girls, we provided a grant of USD 500'000 to support their expansion.
As part of our support to scale proven local solutions, the iCats Program was established to provide sufficient know-how to social enterprises. The program connects the enterprises in need of professional know-how, and experts with the desire to apply their knowledge in a meaningful way. Educate Girls is participating in the iCats Program since 2011 and hosted 3 iCats Fellows who worked for 11-month, full-time on-the-ground to help them grow.
