Access to reliable electricity remains one of the most pressing challenges across the developing world, impacting over 2 billion people globally. Lack of electricity impedes education, healthcare and enterprise – and holds back development. At the same time the technical skills required to provide reliable and clean energy are often lacking locally.

At Lightyear we are addressing this through hands-on solar workshops. In these workshops, students are guided by Lightyear volunteers through the process of making their own solar panels, using silicon off-cuts from large commercial solar panel manufacturers. The panels are then used by the schools to provide lighting, as well as to charge mobile phones and laptops.

We are expanding off the back of two successful pilots in 2013 (read more here and here), and are now recruiting for 10 volunteers for the 2014 DIY Solar Workshops, running from 16th-27th June.

In teams of 3-4, you will work alongside teachers and students to deliver workshops at two schools over the course of the two weeks, with a break in the middle for some idyllic beach time and a chance to share stories.

On the whole, accommodation will be basic but effective. Ghanaian food is always delicious, and we wouldn’t dare comment on the excellent local beer! Oh, and did we mention you’ll get to experience the World Cup in one of the most football-crazy countries on earth?

So if you’re adventurous, enthusiastic and passionate about sustainability…

…if you love science and technology…

…if you believe affordable innovation is the key to development…

…if you can bring something special to our team…

…then please get in touch!
