The CHW Pillar of the MDG Health Alliance is looking for a 3-4 months interim Business Analyst to support an innovation project in the area of Community Health Workers (CHWs).
The MDG Health Alliance is comprised of distinguished business leaders and agencies who have come together to leverage their networks, expertise, and resources to help achieve the Health MDGs upon request of the UN Secretary General. The Community Health Worker (CHW) Pillar is one of seven key initiatives of the Alliance.
Background: Around 7 million children each year die from preventable causes, primarily in the developing world, despite low-cost interventions. The main causes of death are pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria and diseases related to the newborn stage. CHWs – individuals with basic training, recruited from the communities in which they live – are extremely well-placed to help address some of these diseases (in particular diarrhea and malaria), and evidence has shown that they can significantly reduce mortality rates.
The BackPack PLUS: The MDG Health Alliance, UNICEF and a large range of other partners have decided to create the BackPack PLUS.
The Backpack PLUS is the basic kit for the CHW and as such the combination of key drugs and supplies used by CHWs, “soft” elements (e.g. training, access to supervisors, etc), and both of those surrounded by a framework for delivery. The aim of this effort is to develop an emblem for the CHW community and to build a common platform for collecting best practice, aligning partners and facilitating a policy dialogue. And of course to use it as a very active tool for resource mobilization, similarly to how the bednet was and is used for Malaria.
The first step: The initial 3 months design phase of this project will be carried out by ideo.org /frog design in dialogue with the key stakeholders and expert partners such as the Gates Foundation, Save the Children, PSI and partners from the private sector (e.g. Coca-Cola, RTT, etc).
The MDG HA is now looking for a Business/Market Analyst who will be working alongside the design team to develop a CHW BackPack PLUS business case. This will require driving market research, engaging with potential suppliers and incorporating the findings in a financial model. The Business/Market Analyst has to be flexible to travel within the US and will accompany the design team to two African countries for field research.
The responsibilities of the Business/Market Analyst will include:
Develop the business case for the BackPack Plus, taking into account all related costs and impact on lives saved
Conduct market and product analysis on Backpack Plus drugs, other commodities and tools
Approach suppliers for quotes and identify their interest in engagement
Identify relevant partners for product, system and implementation support
Work with the design team to influence the design end-product on the basis of the cost and impact modeling
Compensation
Secondment preferred, or volunteering/sabbatical; reimbursement of expenses through MDG HA
