The end-to-end microinsurance solution for mobile operators
Bima (meaning 'insurance' in Swahili, Bengali, Hindi and Persian) is bulldozing a new wave of microfinancial services in emerging markets, all delivered and sold through the mobile phone. You've heard of the success of M-PESA for mobile banking in Kenya. Bima is trailblazing the same story but with insurance.
3 years after a humble pilot project began in Ghana with a mobile operator called Tigo, Bima is now the largest mobile insurance provider in the world, with 7m subscribers across 8 markets (Ghana, Tanzania, Senegal, Mauritius, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Honduras).
We are adding several new markets per year, setting up and running local operations to roll-out insurance products to the masses in the emerging world. Over 90% of our subscribers have never had insurance before in their lives so we are providing a financial protection and piece of mind that allows them to be more confident in making investments and taking financial risks in life.
Why are we exciting?
We honestly feel we are changing the world we live in today, and we are doing it in a way that is profitable and sustainable.
We are trailblazers, not phased by obstacles put in front of us by traditional players, researchers, insurance industry 'suits' and incumbents in our markets.
We have invented our own approach to solving a global problem (lack of financial protection) and created a market that wasn't there before we began.
We have built a network of 1000 agents worldwide, who are mainly young people helping us to sell and educate people on insurance (like the ones in the photo from Bangladesh). We are constantly growing and have huge ambitions for our company.
We are a young, ambitious and dynamic team of intelligent over-achievers who love to immerse ourselves in new and exotic cultures and adventures.
And finally, we are as adventurous in business as we are in our lives.
What can we offer Escapees?
Our roles offer you the opportunity to pretty much run a business in emerging markets with none of the financial risks or concerns that come with setting up your own business.
Our Country Managers are the CEOs of our local operations, responsible for building a company and agent distribution network, managing relationships with our partners (incl mobile operators, insurance companies and regulators) and making sure that business performs. You have the freedom to make (or break) the business (with some Global strings attached of course, helping you our with best practice along the way).
Our Business Development Managers are in charge of our market expansion, determining what criteria will be used to decide which markets to enter, building relationships with prospective mobile operator and insurance company partners, and building and negotiating the business and commercial models we will run - and then, getting stuck in and setting up the local operation from scratch (including hiring our Country Managers!).
Run a business with all the support and none of the bank-breaking sleepless nights. (Pictured is Bima's Country Manager of Senegal out in the market supporting his team to sell our services in Dakar)
