Our Objectives

CREATING VALUE ACROSS THE END-TO-END FLAVOURS SUPPLY CHAIN

Natural Extracts Industries (NEI) Ltd, established in November 2011, is a social enterprise with a vision to accelerate economic development of smallholder farmers by adding value to their local crops.

This is achieved by processing crops into export quality products and commercializing these in regional and international markets, while ensuring that fair prices are passed back to the farmers.

The company’s supplier strategy aims to partner with and capacitate local farmer groups and cooperatives to ensure consistency and continuity of supply.  The company currently focuses on natural flavourings and spices.

Cultivation

VANILLA FARMER PROGRAMME

To encourage sustainable and high quality cultivation, the programme has established links with over 400 farmers in the Kilimanjaro Region and over 700 farmers in the Kagera Region, where vanilla first arrived from Uganda several decades ago.

Through Farmer Champion representatives, our registered farmers receive training in all aspects of vanilla husbandry and good agricultural practices.  In addition, we aim to build awareness on improved nutrition and HIV/AIDS.  We also provide expert advice on financial and organizational matters, in order to help farmers organise themselves into formal primary cooperatives.

Flavours and spices

ALL NATURAL PRODUCTS FROM THE SLOPES OF MOUNT KILIMANJARO

Every aspect of production, from cultivation through to post-harvest processing and manufacturing, seeks to use only natural materials, inputs and ingredients.  Where possible, we staff women farmers to provide them with an alternate source of income.

Our quality has been recognised both in the regional and international markets, and we continue to explore ways to improve our products and develop new flavours.  Please browse our products section for more details on our flavours and spices, and contact us with any enquiries.

About us

The company works in all areas from cultivation, to post-harvest processing, to value-add manufacturing and to international sales and marketing.  The supply chain currently integrates over 400 farmers from Mount Kilimanjaro and through this sourcing model NEI aims to deliver a longer term socioeconomic impact of ~$350 in incremental annual income per smallholder household, on average.

Products in development include natural flavours, such as: (i) liquid extracts from vanilla (being certified by the Tanzania Food and Drug Authority, TFDA), orange, cocoa and banana (these three at proof of concept stage); and (ii) solid flavours like gourmet-grade bourbon vanilla pods (currently exported to international buyers).
