Natural Extracts Industries Ltd (NEI), a family-run social enterprise, is pioneering the sustainable flavour production industry in Tanzania, starting with vanilla and other flavour extracts.

We are about to embark on a steep growth stage while we bring two production lines online for the launch of our first flavour products.

The role of the General Manager

To be best positioned for this growth stage, NEI is looking to fill the position of General Manager who will report to the Board of Directors and who could eventually move to an Executive Director role within the company.

The ideal candidate will have 5-10 years of managerial experience, during which she/he will have lead large scale projects or small commercial operations, and will bring either strong scientific or financial knowledge.

The single biggest criteria for us is that you have production/operations experience. We need someone who understands how to run a factory and is ready for the next level up while wanting to do some social good.

Any knowledge gaps will be filled within other complementary positions.

This is a unique opportunity for a high calibre individual who is looking to make significant contributions within a start-up social enterprise—an ideal stepping stone for someone looking to transition careers and/or to experience the business environment in a developing country.

The General Manager will be responsible for:

  • Managing and overseeing the day-to-day activities related to all aspects of the company, encompassing operations, finances and people management.

  • Instituting operational rigour for the systematic production of high quality, all natural flavour extracts in two new production lines.

  • Launching a number of flavour products targeted at the luxury hospitality sector.

  • Opening new markets in the East Africa region, working with distributors, associations and leading chefs and restaurants to promote the products; in certain cases establishing longer terms partnerships for tailored flavour products.

  • Strengthening and expanding the raw material supply by outsourcing to small groups and supply partners.

  • Achieving NEI’s ambitious growth plans and helping to define future strategic directions, like in new product categories.

Candidate skills & attributes:

The General Manager candidate should demonstrate the following attributes:

  • +5 years of experience in a managerial position, having tangibly grown an organisation or department during that time, and ideally having reported to or been a member of a supervisory board or committee.

  • Be a dynamic and keen learner, self-motivated and passionate about the food industry, with the intellectual curiosity to explore and experiment with new flavours and raw materials.

  • Exhibit exceptional interpersonal skills to provide leadership, management and mentorship to a dynamic organisation of talented individuals.

  • Be customer-oriented and sales-driven, in order to take advantage of opportunities as they present themselves.

  • Have a robust understanding of contractual arrangements, internal controls and risk mitigation measures to successfully delegate managerial tasks throughout the organisation and to existing and future partner organisations.

In addition to the above, the candidate should possess deep knowledge in one or more of the following:

1. Production and Operations Management
for process control, quality control and continuous process improvement, such as for unitary operations of the extraction process.

2. Food Science or Organic Chemistry, to understand and manage the science of flavours.

3. Financial Management
and analytical tools for controlling production costs, cash flows and setting budget forecasts.

4. Investor Relationship Management for liaising with current and future investors and donors.

Further information:

  • If the candidate is not a Tanzanian national, she/he will need a Class B Resident Permit.
  • Salary will be commensurate with the size of our company and depending on the candidate’s experience level may include benefits such as stock options.
  • A minimum commitment of 2 to 3 years would be expected in order to successfully transition the company throughout the duration of this initial growth phase.
  • The role will be supported by a Chief of Staff and the founding directors may be present for extended periods of time to help in specific business areas or initiatives.
