About us

One Brick at a Time (OBAAT) is an international partnership project led by Chester & District Housing Trust (CDHT), Volunteer Missionary Movement (VMM), Liverpool Hope University (LHU) and our current host in Uganda the Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) in Fort Portal, Uganda. The OBAAT initiative has a proven track record and at present works primarily through a skill exchange between UK construction colleagues and Ugandan construction trainees and graduates. This is achieved by both groups working on key education construction initiatives in schools and other educational sectors in the Rwenzori region of Uganda.

As a key advocate for social enterprise and being professionally and personally committed to addressing issues of social justice, One Brick at a Time – UK, ideally addresses issues related to diversity training, skill exchanges between the developed world and the developing world, contribution to addressing issues of poverty and education attainment as well as offering an exceptional career and personal development programme. So far a group of partners have operated a number of small projects in Uganda; this application is linked to a new development to establish the initiative into a social enterprise company in the UK run on social enterprise principles, which harness commercial methods and generate funds through training activity with clients/companies and thereby create a sustainable and self-reliant approach to international skill exchanges.

Current activity has already made a significant impact with construction activity having taken place at three primary schools, one secondary school, a local university and a teacher training college directly improving the learning environment for over 4000 children. All this activity has been achieved through direct sponsorship, grant aid and partner support.

OBAAT works in partnership with local vocational training institutions, local schools and the wider community to identify need and develop sustainable solutions which create opportunity and benefit to all involved.
