The Open Knowledge Foundation is a dynamic and agile international NGO seeking to grow awareness of one of the most important issues of the 21st century – free and open information – a new, exciting and fast-evolving area.
About the role
Your goals will be to achieve substantial growth in awareness of and engagement with our activities, our active international network, and the organisation; this will be through online communications activities, social media engagement, media coverage and presence at events.
You will also assist our diverse international team and volunteer community in promoting specific projects and events, with guidance and templates for their own sub-brand presentation and marketing, and generally collaborate with the rest of the Network team in their community engagement work.
You will be the team member responsible for the organisation’s communications.
You will need to be proactive, a self-starter and ready to take advantage of opportunities as they arise. You will have, or quickly develop, good judgement to know when to seek advice and direction, and when to push ahead to get tasks done.
You will create, manage and be responsible for the end-to-end delivery of the Open Knowledge Foundation’s communications in line with our overall plans. The role requires mostly social media and online content experience but you will also be expected to assist with events and merchandise and other related activities as required, as part of the Network team (who are responsible for communications, events and community management). Responsibilities which this role may include, on a day-to-day basis, are given below:
Plan communications activity in-depth and provide hands-on delivery
Create and implement awareness campaigns via blog, social media, and also written and broadcast media, on a national and global level
Communicate core organisational messages to both specific and general audiences (including volunteer groups, potential individual and institutional donors, general public and specialist professionals)
Proactively promote achievements, milestones and the Foundation’s agenda
Ensure we are the NGO of choice in our sectors for topical debate and sector commentary
Monitor and report on effectiveness of online communications, campaigns and engagement activities, continuously improving how we reach out and engage new groups and keep the existing Network involved and interested
Writing and producing content
Write high-quality, eye-catching press releases, articles, blog posts and editorial which bring to life our campaigns, volunteer and community activity, and thought-leadership work (in collaboration with the Press Officer)
Coordinate our web output, with new web material, updated content, edited contributions from others, source complementary images and footage
Produce excellent digital assets for marketing, potentially including scripting and producing online videos to promote our work
Network and team support
Support internal team to share key messages, achievements and significant new ideas effectively online
Support team members working in the public arena and on online engagement activities with guidance and support materials as needed
Create training materials (such as toolkits and handbooks) for use by our volunteer communities around the world to support their own communications work
Other communications and marketing
Create ideas and spot opportunities for PR and communications activities and priorities for the Open Knowledge Foundation
Assist with handling of requests for speakers at third party events
Identify opportunities in Open, where we can encourage new and upcoming communities and interest areas
Design marketing materials and merchandise (flyers, posters, stickers, T shirts and more) in collaboration with designers, and set up channels for sales of these if needed
Build strong relationships with media personnel at all levels, including identifying key target channels
Support Open Knowledge Foundation-run events and events we attend with relevant materials, briefings, press releases, leaflets/stickers/etc, and ideas.
Key skills and experience
Interested in working for a good cause, you will be creative, a great communicator, well-organised and have strong online communications experience. You will have digital fluency online and experience managing social media presence for organisations. You will be motivated, responsible and enthusiastic, showing great attention to detail.
You will have worked within a similar role previously, and will be familiar with the agile and lightweight support systems in such small and growing workplaces. You’ll be a self-starter, able to interact proactively with the team, volunteers and partners, with the ability to set your own goals and shape communications activity yourself. You will work closely with the Press Officer but you will be our sole expert in the area of communications and able to take the lead in planning, delivery and monitoring of this work. You will be able to prioritise your own work rapidly and effectively in a fast-moving field and busy working environment.
You will have demonstrable skills at developing tone of voice and delivering a consistent brand presence day to day, flawless and clear written English with experience in copywriting and proofreading, a proven track-record in developing compelling stories from specialist or technical material which engages audiences, and be a skilled communicator, confident when dealing with people at all levels, from government officials to grassroots activists.
The Open Knowledge Foundation works globally and many of our team work remotely most days. We will consider applicants based anywhere in the world, however if you are within reach of one of our clusters in London or Cambridge, that is preferred.
