Publica is a privately owned, London based, public realm and urban design consultancy that has grown organically since its foundation in 2010.

The business works with a high-profile client base, which includes major landowners, developers, local authorities, architects and community groups across the capital.

The owner has plans to grow the business significantly over the coming years by broadening the service offering, identifying new clients groups and potentially new geographies and is now in need of a strong, commercially-minded finance professional to help prepare the business for growth.

The Head of Finance & Operations will be part of the senior management team and will be expected to contribute at both a strategic and operational level.

This role would suit an ambitious finance professional looking to move into his/her first business leadership role or an experienced finance leader looking for a smaller entrepreneurial environment.

Publica is still a small, entrepreneurial business and therefore its senior management team will need to have a very hands-on approach to the day-to-day management.

The Head of Finance & Operations will have main responsibilities to include:

  • responsibility for the company’s finance and accounting functions.
  • financial planning and related ongoing advice for the Managing Partner and the senior management team.
  • formulating financial targets, forecasts and budgets in accordance with the strategy determined by the board.
  • overall control of all financial transactions and accountancy matters, including system controls.
  • managing company policies regarding capital requirements, debt and taxation.
  • cash flow, forecasts and management.
  • ensuring that the regulatory requirements of all statutory bodies are met regarding all the company’s financial affairs.
  • working with the company’s advisors on accounting, finance and legal matters.
  • advising the Managing Partner and the senior management team on contracts and client documentation. 
  • assisting the Managing Partner and the senior management team on fees/ day rates/fee proposals. 
  • production and presentation of monthly management accounts to senior management. 
  • responsibility for enhancing financial safeguards and controls. 

Operations:

As well as assuming responsibility for the overall finance function, the Head of Finance & Operations will also provide assistance with HR, IT and Facilities working with 3rd parties where appropriate.

Education and Experience:


  • Degree-level education.
  • Qualified member of an accountancy body or holder of an equivalent qualification. 
  • 3-5 years + PQE/or business experience. 
  • Experience of managing professional staff. 
  • Experience in liaising with and reporting to senior management. 
  • Experience of working in a fee-based environment would be useful although not essential. 

For the right candidate flexible-working patterns could be a possibility.
