The Royal Geographical Society (with The Institute of British Geographers) seeks a member of staff to support the work of Geography Outdoors: the centre supporting field research, exploration and outdoor learning providing information, advice and training to anyone wishing to undertake these activities either in the UK or overseas. The centre is part of the Society’s Education and Outdoor Learning Department.

Specifically, the post holder will undertake tasks in four broad areas: course/workshop administration and marketing, finance administration, answering general enquiries and information handling – alongside all other reasonable duties.

The following are the requirements for this post. These are the criteria against which candidates will be short listed and judged and it is in your interest to ensure that you cover each of these areas in the covering letter of your application.

Essential:
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills, ideally with experience in a busy office. This will include proven desktop computing and web skills 
  • Good communication skills on the telephone, in person and in writing and prior experience of customer services 
  • Numerical competence and an ability to manage day-to-day financial transactions. 
  • Proven ability to prioritise tasks, meet deadlines and operate with efficiency in a multi-task environment. 
  • Ability to work either independently or as part of a team, taking personal responsibility for your own work load. 
  • Proven experience &/or understanding of fieldwork and expeditions.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate a clear understanding of the requirements and support required by those undertaking fieldwork and expedition activities as well as a keen interest in promoting geography. 
  • Educated to degree level, with a strong preference for a degree in geography, with one to two years of relevant work or equivalent experience as a minimum 
Desirable 
  • Experience of event management. 
  • Experience of marketing. 
  • Experience of using databases, web content management systems and social media.
