Who are we and what do we do?

Shalina Healthcare Group, a multi-national manufacturer of Pharmaceutical and consumer Healthcare products, set about developing an import, Distribution and Wholesale operation in Juba, South Sudan in 2012. Shalina Pharmacy Ltd has now been trading for 10 months and is looking for energetic, enthusiastic and dynamic individuals who want to do something a bit different in a very different place. South Sudan, having become a country in July 2011 after more than 20 years of civil war is the youngest country in the world. As such its government, infrastructure and economy is still very much in its infancy which brings many unique challenges to working and living here.

What does that actually mean….?

Having established an operational infrastructure in the form of a 600 sq metre Wholesale Sales Facility, a 300sq metre warehouse and a residential compound we have generated more than $1m USD sales in less than 12 months. We now urgently need enthusiastic, flexible and patient individuals to help us co-ordinate sales and marketing efforts. Given the challenging operational environment and the relatively unique environment, experience isn’t a major pre-requisite. What is more important to us is the level of energy, drive and proactivity that someone can inject to help us increase run-rate revenue and scale the business further in the next 12-18 months.

The Managing Director (Ex Streetcar and AnyJunk) and Operations Director (Ex-Commercial Property Development Manager) are both young British Expats who have left London in the last few years looking for new challenges. As such, there is a strong entrepreneurial emphasis where the working atmosphere is focussed on getting things done rather than corporate face time. Working attire is much more polo shirt than suit and what you can deliver is much more important than face time in the office. If you want a role measured by what you personally can achieve rather than what a complex web of bureaucracy limits you to, then this may be the role you have been looking for.

The Role Itself

As the Sales & Marketing Co-ordinator you would be responsible for the continued promotion of our brands and the company itself throughout South Sudan. You would report directly to the Operations Director with indirect reporting and significant contact with the Managing Director. Despite being a senior role, this isn’t a role for someone looking to manage from afar, it requires someone willing to get their hands dirty and lead from the front to focus on the following areas;

  • Sourcing and delivering promotional materials from China, Dubai, India or alternative supply channels
  • Devising and implementing activities to distribute promotional materials
  • Designing and effecting PR generation Activities
  • Exploring and suggesting alternative ways to promote the business (Outdoor, Radio, TV)
  • Taking responsibility for effective, efficient and full use of the $300K Marketing Budget

Key Criteria for the role would be;

  • A strong degree from a well-respected University
  • 2-3 years min experience working in a full time role
  • Strong Computer skills – Word, Outlook and Excel
  •
  • The ability to get things done in unique situations
  • Amazing amounts of enthusiasm, energy, charm and patience
  • A sense of adventure and a ‘try anything once’ attitude

Additional features which would be highly valued (but not necessarily required)

  • Experience of having lived and worked outside the UK (for general cultural awareness and experience of living outside your comfort zone)
  • Specific experience of having worked or travelled within Africa
  • Time spent working in SMEs and high growth businesses
  • Any experience of having managed marketing, promotional and PR activities
