The Shining Life Volunteer Programme is a programme for qualified professionals and university students centred around a three-week placement on a Shining Life Children’s Trust project in Sri Lanka. The placement dates in Sri Lanka are between 22 July and 12 August 2013.

The Shining Life Volunteer Programme offers volunteers a challenging, rewarding and motivating professional and personal development experience.  Involvement lasts 9 months, centred on a three-week placement on a Shining Life project in Sri Lanka. On placement Shining Life volunteers will be based in one of Shining Life’s project areas to share skills and expertise with peers in the areas of leadership, management and community development.

Shining Life provides the volunteers with comprehensive training and support before, during and after the placement. This is carefully designed so that all those involved in the Shining Life Volunteer Programme – the volunteers, their placement community and their own communities in the UK and Ireland– can extract maximum benefit from the programme, in accordance with the volunteers’ own education, volunteering and development experiences.

Volunteers will spend three weeks working on one of Shining Life Children’s Trust community development projects. In 2013, volunteers will be placed with our long-term project partner Women’s Development Centre, based in Kandy City in the Central Province of Sri Lanka.

Shining Life and Women’s Development Centre have been project partners since August 2010 and in that time have been implementing the ‘Empowering Communities in Kandy District’ Project. This project works with vulnerable children residing in three divisional secretariat areas in the Kandy district of the Central Province of Sri Lanka.

You can find out more about our work with Women’s Development Centre and the ‘Empowering Communities in Kandy District’ Project here: http://www.shininglife.org/wdc_main.html

The main role of the volunteer will be to act as a support to WDC staff, active engagement in community activities and bringing new ideas, energy and enthusiasm to the communities they will be working in.

To be eligible, volunteers must:

• Have some basic knowledge and/or experience of international development;

• Have a minimum of one years’ experience in community based/not-for-profit sectors;

• Over 18 years of age;

• Some of these criteria may be flexible depending on the needs of our partner organisation in Sri Lanka.

There is a fee of £300 for participation in the programme. This fee is a contribution towards the costs of the volunteer’s participation in the programme (including training, materials, food, accommodation and local travel in Sri Lanka, placement costs and on-going support).

All selected volunteers will be required to undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check, previously known as Criminal Records Bureau Check. Please see Shining Life Children’s Trust’s Child Protections Policy for more information: http://www.shininglife.org/leaflets/Child_Protection_Policy_Sept_2012.pdf
