This is an exciting opportunity to take a key role with the Social Business Trust, a growing social investment fund, and to work with some of the most high profile leaders of UK business.

This position is full time maternity cover for 12 months, starting in September, with the potential for on-going opportunities.

Social Business Trust (“SBT”) is a charitable partnership of seven global businesses, who have come together to combine their resources and professional expertise to help accelerate the growth of social enterprises. Founded by Damon Buffini and Adele Blakebrough MBE, SBT believes there are a number of social enterprises capable of scaling up their operations on a regional and national level and has a clear and ambitious goal: to help transform the impact of social enterprises and thereby improve the lives of up to 1 million people in the UK.  SBT’s strengths and capabilities come from a combination of the partners’ commercial and industrial experience; their insights into the needs and sensitivities of social enterprises; and their operational expertise and access to growth capital.

We are looking for an experienced candidate, who can lead our investment team to build a pipeline of potential investments, and present investment opportunities to our Investment Committee. The candidate will focus on on-going management of the SBT portfolio of investments, working with the CEOs and management teams of some of the UK’s most ambitious social enterprises, to support them to achieve scale and to ensure that the SBT portfolio delivers maximum value.

The seven partners of SBT are Bain & Company, British Gas, Clifford Chance, Credit Suisse, Ernst & Young, Permira and Thomson Reuters.  Our Investment Committee is made up of senior representatives from each of these organisations.

 Key responsibilities:

·         Work with and lead a team of 2 investment managers  to build SBT’s investment pipeline, research and visit potential investees and actively seek out investment opportunities

·         Oversee due diligence on applications from social enterprises for funding and support from SBT

·         Develop the scope for SBT professional support projects as part of the due diligence through understanding of the business and current capabilities

·         Interact with the CEOs of potential investees; present well argued, comprehensive investment cases to SBT’s Investment Committee; and deal effectively with robust challenges from Committee members

·         Manage the SBT relationship with the portfolio companies including set up and monitoring of SBT professional support delivery

·         Work with the senior leadership of the SBT portfolio companies to support their growth and ensure SBT delivers maximum value to the organisation through the projects delivered

·         Provide advice, and mentoring to the portfolio, identifying areas of further support for the portfolio companies to overcome challenges to growth

·         Track and monitor performance (financial and social impact) of the portfolio and report back to the investment committee

·         Evaluate SBT performance and improve internal processes to increase efficient delivery

·         Act as a senior member of SBT’s leadership team, supporting the Chief Executive and other team members as appropriate

·         Promote SBT within the sector

·         At least 7 years business experience in industry, commerce or professional services, with some management experience

·         Comfortable working with business leaders, management teams and CEOs

·         Numerate and financially literate

·         Experience of reviewing business plans and assessing operational strategies at an organisation/company level

·         Due diligence experience is an advantage

·         A keen interest in and some experience of social enterprises or the “Third Sector”

 Candidate Profile:

The candidate must have the following attributes:

·         Confident team leader, with the ability to work independently

·         Highly organised, reliable and measured in their approach

·         Ability to manage and motivate the team around them and to “manage upwards”

·         Flexible, open to any task and a good team player

·         Personable and professional

·         Hands on, good attention to detail with an ability to get things done

·         Positive and enthusiastic

To be discussed.  SBT offers remuneration packages that are competitive within its sector
