Startup Direct provides funding, mentoring and support to start up businesses. Based in the heart of London’s start up community in Shoreditch our office is a great environment to work and our Friday ping pong tournament is not to be missed.

Start up Direct is proud to be a delivery partner for the governments Start up Loans scheme. Start up loans, chaired by James Caan, aims to promote entrepreneurship and boost enterprise growth in England.  Its objective is to help start up 50,000 businesses over the next three years by providing funding and a range of business start-up support services. Start up Direct is also a member of Youth Business International.

We are looking for a Business Adviser with a mix of finance and business experience. This is an exciting opportunity to get involved in a high-profile start up and be part of something that is much more than your regular corporate job. It’s a fast paced, dynamic environment; you will find it challenging but gain incredible experience and exposure that is unrivalled anywhere else. 

The primary focus of this role is to assess the viability of the loan applications from entrepreneurs, provide general business advice to applicants and assist them with business plan development in order for them to have the best chance of securing funding. Working within a high-profile start-up itself, the successful candidate needs to be able to work autonomously and be results-driven with a demonstrable track record of self-generated success.  

Key responsibilities
  • Screening the initial enquiries to determine if the applicants are ready to go through to the second stage
  • Assess the viability of the business applications/plans, provide feedback and determine what additional support is needed 
  • Provide support to applicants either face to face or through regular advice surgeries in order to help the applicants further develop their business plan and become “loan ready”
  • Produce detailed loan application appraisals, including assessing an individuals ability to repay the loan
  • Contribute to the development of training and support programmes for applicants in order to improve their chance of securing funding and to improve the business survival rate 
  • Deliver business planning training directly to applicants as/when needed
  • Ensure all required data and information are captured in order to monitor performance
  • Undertake other tasks as directed by line manager


Knowledge and experience 

  • Strong experience of analysing start-up financial data and key performance ratios
  • Proven understanding of commercial business gained through either SME management or experience of running own business 
  • Extensive knowledge of key business processes and aspects that affect the success of a business start up
  • Direct experience in assessing business plans
  • Sound understanding of management accounts and their impact on business
  • Well-developed training, coaching, mentoring and motivational skills
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Direct credit assessment experience gained from the banking or investment sector a bonus
  • Well-developed analytical skills including the ability to assimilate complex information, identify and priorities key issues and assist the client to identify practical solutions
  • Strong IT skills, proficient in Microsoft Office, especially in excel.
