Background and job purpose

Start-up Loans Company is a government-backed organisation, chaired by Chairman James Caan, tasked to promote entrepreneurship and boost enterprise growth in England. 

Startup Direct is the founding delivery partner of the Startup Loans Scheme, based in London and recently opened a Birmingham base. Startup Direct provides funding, mentoring and support to startup businesses. To help achieve our ambitious goal of supporting 1000’s of entrepreneurs over the coming years, we are looking for a talented and ambitious Business Advisor to help provide support to entrepreneurs in Birmingham.  

The primary focus of this role is to provide pre and post loan support to entrepreneurs in Birmingham and recruit volunteer mentors as required. The role will be 1 day per week for the initial month, potentially moving to 2 or 3 days per week depending on workload. The successful candidate will receive marketing support from Startup Direct as well as ongoing training. Whilst this is a commission based freelance role you will be welcomed as a member of the team and be fully supported as you help grow the business in Birmingham. Working within a high-profile startup itself, the successful candidate needs to be able to work autonomously and be results-driven with a demonstrable track record of self-generated success.  

Key responsibilities

  • Meet with applicants to assess suitability for the scheme
  • Provide pre loan support – assisting applicants with their business plans & financials
  • Provide post loan support – provide mentoring to successful applicants
  • Build a local referral network to generate leads
  • Networking to locate and sign up new volunteer mentors
  • Meeting with potential mentors to assess suitability for the scheme
  • Matching successfully signed mentors with mentees, managing the on-going relationship
  • Contributing ideas to the marketing plan, implementing marketing/PR strategies
  • Forming partnerships
  • Event organisation
  • Attending networking events
  • Contribute to the development of training and support programmes for applicants in order to improve their chance of securing funding and to improve the business survival rate 
  • Deliver business planning training directly to applicants as/when needed 

Knowledge and experience 

  • Strong experience gained from working in a startup or SME business
  • Experience promoting and networking to gain new business
  • Extensive knowledge of key business processes and aspects that affect the success of a business start up
  • Sound understanding of management accounts and their impact on business
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Well-developed training, coaching, mentoring and motivational skills
  • Experience in working with mentors and support agencies
  • Strong project management and client portfolio management skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook and Excel.
