Ten years after a brutal civil war, Sierra Leone is still one of the poorest countries in the world. While this small and beautiful West African country is now at peace, our own research indicates that there are around 50,000 children relying upon the streets of Sierra Leone for their survival. We hope to help them all.
Street Child is a volunteer-led charity which works with street kids and out of school children.
Working with children still living on the streets, we help them find security through counselling and the stabilising presence of our social workers. We then work towards reunifying them with their families, getting them back in school and helping them to stay there by offering their family small business grants and training. We also help to provide deprived rural communities with their first-ever basic schools giving children the chance to thrive through education.
Last year – and every year since our launch in 2008 – we spent 90% of our donations in Sierra Leone directly on our projects. As a result of our work, nearly 2,000 children have been reunited with their families and over 10,000 are now in school.
At Street Child, we are very proud of our volunteer-based approach. Our small London team provides strategic oversight for the programme work in Sierra Leone, focuses on fundraising and communications for the development and expansion of Street Child and provides administrative and other support for the work in Sierra Leone and beyond.
We are very lucky to have some fantastic volunteers committed to our cause, and we are now looking for an outstanding individual to undertake a communications internship for 3-5 days a week at our London office (travel expenses paid, hours flexible) reporting directly to the Communications Director.
In turn, we aim to offer you invaluable work experience and the chance to support some of the most vulnerable children in the world. Internships at Street Child are guaranteed to be busy and varied and this is a great opportunity to offer real value to our team whilst gaining valuable experience in return. Equally you will have the opportunity to shape your own experience here according to your skills, goals and knowledge, and we will do our best to support you in your career development.
