Based in London (with the opportunity to visit Liberia, West Africa) – Devise a campaign to raise crucial funds for Street Child’s Family Business Scheme. An initiative that provides seed funding plus training to impoverished families in one of the poorest communities in the world.

The challenge
In West Africa, the primary cause of a child ending up on the street is poverty. Earning little over $1 per day, family heads struggle to support their often large families and children end up dependent on the streets for survival. For boys this often results in joining gangs, sleeping rough and causal labour. For girls this can mean commercial sex. Street Child’s teams of social workers support street children back into family homes and into school through counselling and mediation.

To ensure they do not return to the street a family’s deficient earning potential must be addressed. Street Child’s Family Business Scheme provides grants, training and a saving scheme to lift families out of poverty. A ‘seed’ grant helps to launch or grow a small business such as wood selling, hairdressing or a cooking shop.

Training and support ensures that family heads have the necessary business skills to make their enterprise a success. A second ‘match’ grant is offered to incentivise saving, when the family have saved an agreed amount of money Street Child matches this.

This September, Street Child placed 200 street-connected children who were found in the slums of Monrovia, Liberia, back into family homes and into school. Street Child needs to raise funds to support their 200 families with business grants to lift them all out of poverty… forever.

We are seeking a creative and proactive individual to design and implement a campaign that will inform the public and potential funders of the plight of these 200 children and their families and raise the necessary funds to provide 200 Family Business Grants.

How would you tell people about this initiative?
What would you do to source funds for 200 Business Grants to help some of the poorest families in the world?

The right candidate will be able to demonstrate the following characteristics and skills:

  •  Creative thinking
  • Strong writing skills (both creative and academic)
  • Interest in International Development and social impact
  • Proactive and Professional
  • Ability to work independently
