Ten years after a brutal civil war, Sierra Leone is still one of the poorest countries in the world. While this small and beautiful West African country is now at peace, our own research indicates that there are around 50,000 children relying upon the streets of Sierra Leone for their survival. We hope to help them all.

Street Child is a volunteer-led charity which works with street kids and out of school children.

Working with children still living on the streets, we help them find security through counselling and the stabilising presence of our social workers. We then work towards reunifying them with their families, getting them back in school and helping them to stay there by offering their family small business grants and training. We also help to provide deprived rural communities with their first-ever basic schools giving children the chance to thrive through education.

As a result of our work between 2008 and 2013, more than 2,000 children have been reunited with their families and over 20,000 are now in school.

The Role: Communications Internship

Street Child is seeking an outstanding individual to undertake a communications internship for 3-5 days a week at our London office (travel expenses paid, hours flexible) reporting directly to the Communications Director.

The position includes: supervised management of all social media activity across the Street Child brand; assisting with delivery of all communications activity, including the development of internal / external communications and marketing material, both online and offline; effective administration of communications planning.

Internships at Street Child are guaranteed to be busy and varied and this is a great opportunity to offer real value to our team whilst gaining valuable experience in return. Equally, interns will have the opportunity to shape their own experience according to their skills, goals and knowledge.

Our aim is to offer interns invaluable work experience and we will do our best to support them in their career development.

The ideal candidate would have the following:

  • Strong academic credentials;
  • A proactive and professional approach;
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
  • Experience of writing copy and use of social media in a professional capacity;
  • Experience of digital media; in particular, website management a significant advantage;
  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team;
  • A keen interest in charity and development.
