Teach First

Teach First

Teach First is an independent charity working to address one of the UK’s most damaging social issues – educational disadvantage. We recruit exceptional graduates and experienced professionals into a two-year leadership development programme during which they become classroom teachers, engage and inspire young people, and develop the skills and behaviours to take up leadership positions. Teach First enables its participants and ambassadors in the classroom to raise the achievement, aspiration, and access to opportunity of children from low socio-economic backgrounds, whilst developing a network of leaders with a life-long commitment to ending inequality in education from both inside and outside the classroom.

About the Teach First Innovation Unit

The Teach First Innovation Unit exists to nurture game-changing social enterprise in education.   We are serious about narrowing the gaps in access, attainment and aspiration between children from the lowest and highest socio-economic backgrounds. We believe that in order to do this we need to be nurturing ambitious, new ideas and supporting the very best of them to grow and maximise their impact more quickly.   The Innovation Unit runs an ambitious programme of activity including Innovation Weekends across the country, a prestigious Innovation Award, Innovation Booster events and deep partnership working with our social enterprises with the highest potential. Generously supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and Credit Suisse, we have significant funding to implement and develop the Unit’s work over the next three years. The Unit is only 7 months old, yet the small, highly motivated team has already built a strong reputation in the sector and achieved outstanding results.

Job purpose

To lead the Innovation Unit for 12 months, covering maternity leave for the current Associate Director of Innovation, providing direction for the team to not only achieve the ambitious results that have been agreed with our funding partners, but also to find new ways to increase the Innovation Unit’s impact.

In this role, you are also a member of the Teach First wider Leadership Team, responsible for contributing to the overall organisation’s progress and direction and supporting the Director of the Community Impact Department to ensure that Teach First is a leading player within a broader movement to end educational inequality.

Key accountabilities

The Associate Director of Innovation is the Head of the Innovation Unit. He/she is accountable for:

  • High quality delivery within the Innovation Unit: ensuring the Innovation Unit team delivers key priorities successfully, so that more powerful ideas are nurtured and our partner social enterprises achieve more impact than they could without Teach First’s support. (See appendix for programme of activity and targets)
  • Leading strategic planning: promoting the Innovation Unit to internal and external audiences, building powerful networks in the sector, reporting on progress to funding partners, sourcing additional funding streams for 2014-15, planning and monitoring the Unit’s budget, developing proposals (where appropriate) for developing the Innovation Unit’s work further and ensuring appropriate measurement through the development of Organisational Goals and KPIs
  • Leading a powerful, motivated, developing team:  managing the members of the team effectively, leading their performance and development and championing their work internally and externally
  • Exercising wider leadership within the Community Impact Department (in which the Innovation Unit sits) and the Teach First wider leadership team: supporting the Director of Community Impact to build a strong, coherent, effective department, taking on specific department-wide responsibilities and contributing to the development of Teach First’s overall strategic direction through participation in relevant Leadership Days and discussions

The following competencies are essential for the role:

  • Expertise in the education and social enterprise sectors
  • Experience of leading and motivating highly successful teams to achieve ambitious results
  • Experience in setting a clear vision and strategy and delivering against it effectively
  • Experience in managing and developing a strong team culture
  • Experience of managing significant financial responsibility and accountability
  • Strong track record in building productive relationships and powerful networks
  • Expertise in influencing colleagues and partners at all levels of seniority
