Wednesday 1 May, 6:45pm
The TELL Series presents Mark Blandford.
After running a traditional bricks and mortar bookmaker's for 15 years, Mark recognized the potential of the internet in the 1990's, and launched Sportingbet.com in 1998.
He subsequently listed the company on AIM in 2001, raising £18m, and went on to build a business with over 1 million customers across 150 countries, over £1bn in revenues, and over £100m in profits.
Come and hear Mark's amazing story on May 1st!
Q&A
Ahead of the event, Mark participated in a Q&A with TELL to provide some insight into his journey:
TELL: If a student interested in entrepreneurship asked you for one piece of practical advice, what would it be?
Mark: There's no substitute for research and planning but ultimately you will need to take the plunge and dive in. Be ready for that moment.
TELL: What's the most difficult business decision you've ever made?
Mark: Good question! Most difficult decision would have to be the scale of downsizing that Sportingbet had to undertake following a change in legislation in its biggest market, the US, which forced the company to withdraw.
TELL: We often hear that entrepreneurs learn way more from their failures than their successes. What did you learn from your biggest business failure?
Mark: Having the courage of my convictions and not to listen to others who have no risk appetite.
TELL: What motivates you?
Mark: I'm motivated by the satisfaction of seeing success in something which began as my idea.
