StreetDoctors educate and empower young people with the skills to deliver life-saving first aid at the scene of a stabbing or collapse

StreetDoctors is an award winning initiative started by medical students in Liverpool in 2008 when we asked eleven young offenders if they had ever seen a stabbing – all of them had. We realised that by teaching this high risk group how to call 999 effectively and deliver simple first aid we could save lives. StreetDoctors is a group of over 120 volunteer medical students and doctors who teach young people in Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham, London and Sheffield. We have taught over 1400 young offenders life saving skills and know of three cases where young people have delivered first aid with positive outcomes.
The Challenge

StreetDoctors is moving from being a small scale student voluntary organisation teaching around 400 young people a year to a national movement and charity hoping to teach over 1000 young people in 2012 and expanding to teach all high risk young people in cities that have high levels of violence. We have delivered a remarkable amount with only £4000, due to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers and kind support from advisers and trainers. Currently we are developing our infrastructure and strategy for fundraising to build a sustainable and scalable organisation.

Could you be a StreetDoctors Trustee?

Street Doctors is looking for skilled and experienced people to join our board of trustees as we grow to fulfil our vision. We are particularly looking for people with experience in financial management, business planning, fundraising, marketing, volunteer management or youth justice. We would appreciate active involvement from trustees at this critical phase as we leap the hurdle from an entirely voluntary organisation to develop a sustainable model. Responsibilities will include quarterly board meetings (mostly based in London), ensuring that the charity is well run and is delivering its objectives. The charity commission have a great document describing the role of a trustee.
