The Board of Directors and staff at the Helen Bamber Foundation (HBF) are dedicated to working with survivors of torture to enable them to rebuild their lives. HBF has an international reputation for providing medical consultation, therapeutic care, legal protection and practical support to survivors of human rights violations. We are a team of therapists, doctors, legal experts and caseworkers who help men, women and children heal the emotional and physical damage they have suffered through torture, trafficking or other forms of cruelty.

HBF is seeking a new Treasurer to join its Board who will be able to dedicate their time, knowledge and vision, on a voluntary basis, to drive the long-term financial sustainability of the charity and ensure strong financial management. This person is key to providing strategic guidance as well as to supporting the Executive Director and Finance Manger to deliver the operational financial functions.

The Treasurer would be a qualified and experienced accountant and good communicator, ideally with previous charitable accounting and Treasurer experience.


Responsibilities as a non-executive Trustee includes:

  • Supervision of the financial manager, record keeping, accounting, budgeting and reporting.

  • Supervision of monthly financial updates for the board with executive summary.

  • Attend board meetings (in London).

  • Support the board with strategic financial planning and financial expertise when required.

  • Supervise annual accounts preparation and external audit process.

  • Oversight to ensure financial management and control functions suitable and compliant with the charities commission requirements.

  • Monitor fundraising sufficient for expenditure requirements and reserves policy.

  • Ensure appropriate accountability to donors.

  • Ad hoc financial support as required by Board, the Executive Director and the Finance Manager

    Time commitment

    Time commitments envisaged are as follows:

  • Quarterly board meetings

  • Monthly meeting with the Executive Director and Finance Manager to review management accounts and financial controls

  • Annual oversight of the year end accounts preparation and audit process.
