Our 'Leaders in Development' Programme is designed to support the capacity building of our local partners while providing participants with an invaluable personal development opportunity.

Participants will be training and working with a local organisation that need specific capacity building support.

Ten-years of civil war left a large skills gap in Sierra Leone. The country is now stable, but needs support to train its work-force so the country can reach it’s full potential. This one-month leadership programme is designed to give staff members of local organisations the skills to help drive them forward as well as providing an excellent personal development opportunity.

What will I be doing?

Week One: Your first three days will be spent attending country orientation training, providing you with information about Sierra Leone’s history, language, culture and traditions, and vital information on staying safe.

Week Two: You will attend leadership development training sessions run by The Collective with a colleague from your partner organisation and other participants and organisations. The focus of the training is on developing skills and the confidence to effectively lead yourself and others.

Week Three-Five: You will be placed within your partner organisation. All of our partners are local community based organisations that need specific capacity building support. Depending on the specific need of the organisation, your support could include, designing new projects, conducting field research, monitoring and evaluating work, writing reports or developing communications plans.

What will we do at the training? The training, led by The Collective, will be focused on improving the leadership potential of individuals and exploring how this can be best implemented into the context of local Sierra Leonean organisations.

Modules will cover:

  • What is leadership?
  • Self-reflection
  • Find your leadership style
  • Communication and public speaking
  • Decision-making and problem-solving
  • Negotiation
  • Resilience

Leadership Training Overview

What can I expect to learn? This programme had been designed by The Collective both for those interested in international development or applying for the Teach First programme. In fundraising for the placement and during your time in Sierra Leone we will work together to ensure you are building and documenting the key competencies for future employees.

Sierra Leone provides a challenging work environment where the opportunities for personal development are endless. On the programme, we will get together weekly to evaluate the previous week. We will assess what went well, what your priorities are for the coming week, and hold trouble-shooting sessions where you can support your peers to find solutions and share ideas. We encourage you to do a lot of self-reflection whilst you’re here, evaluating your performance and challenging yourself to push your boundaries. You will be working and learning alongside like-minded people, all with a passion for international development and the eradication of educational disadvantage.

What impact will I have?

All of the programmes we run are mutually beneficial to both participants and the organisations they support. We place paramount importance on this, and believe that development cannot be a one-way process. We work hard to ensure that the processes are in place for you to not only develop yourself, but also the organisation and individuals you are working with.

Together with your partner organisation, you will set specific, measurable goals to work towards over the programme. This could, for instance, be to deliver one leadership training module to 10 of your organisation’s beneficiaries. As well as participating in training with your host organisation, you will also be working with them to develop new project ideas. This could include monitoring and evaluating current projects, developing marketing and communication plans or fundraising strategies. All with the aim of helping internal staff build capacity.

We want all the organisations we support to feel the benefit of hosting an intern, and demonstrate the impact you have had on them.
