About us

The Craig Bellamy Foundation (CBF) is a charity that offers underprivileged children in Sierra Leone the chance to reach their true potential through sport and education, enabling them to build a better life for themselves and their communities.

Craig's vision

In 2007 Wales football star Craig Bellamy visited a friend in the West African nation of Sierra Leone. Craig saw through the country's desperate poverty and he saw potential for a project that could offer hope.

With a car full of footballs he travelled through the country, stopping wherever he saw kids playing the game they love, to give them a ball...and join in!

Everywhere he went he saw how much passion and commitment there was for the beautiful game but he also witnessed the lack of education and poor health. Craig had an idea, to use football to inspire positive personal and social change among the children.

He wanted to build an academy of excellence to give promising players the support they would need to develop on and off the field. From the foundations of the CBF Academy, and with UNICEF's generous support, the CBF League was born.

Working together for a better Sierra Leone

We aim to build a better future for Sierra Leone by offering children the opportunity to reach their full potential by playing the sport that they love.

The Craig Bellamy Foundation harnesses this passion for football and uses it to promote healthy choices, education for all, gender equality and sustainable development.

How we work

The CBF League was launched in 2009 with support from UNICEF. Using football to empower a new generation to bring about positive change we focus on increasing school attendance and respect for fair play, whilst delivering community development projects. Involving more than 2,000 boys and girls around the country the CBF League is having a considerable impact.

The CBF Academy opened its doors in August 2010. We recruit some of Africa's most talented young athletes and work with them to produce football players who are well-rounded, inspirational role models. Five-year scholarships are given to children aged 11-13 who live, study and train at its state-of-the-art facilities.

A central feature of all of our work is improving governance. We advocate for an end to over-age player selection in youth football and an end to violence and corruption associated with football. We also campaign to prevent the exploitation of young African footballers, while supporting the Sierra Leone FA and Ministry of Sport to improve governance in sport.

What can we offer Escapees?

Whether you are an experienced professional on a career break, or just embarking on a career, our Professional Volunteer Programme offers you the chance to gain valuable international experience and the opportunity to really make a difference, whilst enjoying the vibrant life of the West African coast.

As a volunteer you would be based at our Academy, where life is much more than just school and football....staff and volunteers alike share their hobbies and passions with the boys and you can help out at schools in the surrounding community. There are also numerous opportunities to visit the capital, Freetown, and the main regions of the country where our League operates. Unlike many volunteering opportunities, we only ask that you cover the cost of your travel to Sierra Leone.
