About us

The EXPEDITION Project is an innovative organisation that supports and initiates social, environmental and tourism projects, while also facilitating and overseeing Corporate Social Investment initiatives and sustainable transition (greening) campaigns on behalf of corporate organisations.  This mission is executed via annual overland expeditions, and a free solutions oriented online platform, both which are made sustainable through sponsorships, collaborative partnerships, volunteer tourism and independent media productions. Target demographics include collaborating stakeholders, corporate organisations, worldwide audiences looking for more sustainable lifestyles, community projects, local small businesses and international special interest travellers.

Why are we exciting?

The EXPEDITION Project has reinvented volunteer tourism and internships by taking it on a road trip including static and mobile projects. This offers volunteers access to a far greater scope of projects and a large variety of cultures and landscapes. It contributes to the sustainability of the organisation through the funds it generates, but it also contributes valuable skills to the team. Volunteers are directly involved in project assessments and practical project support. Additionally, they assist with expedition research, which is a significant aspect of the organisation’s work. They also assist with the creation and publication of media material that gives all stakeholders excellent exposure and networking opportunities.

The EXPEDITION Project offers people a panoramic experience of South Africa while giving them opportunities to meaningfully contribute to worthy social and environmental projects. Its overland expeditions cover large areas of the country, giving volunteers a chance to encounter diverse cultures and landscapes. Its network of tourism partners also provides a wide range of quality accommodation – ranging from guest lodges to community home-stays. The geographical scope and extended duration of the expeditions also make for flexible touring options, allowing volunteers to join for anything from a few days to two months. By 2014/2015 volunteers and staff may be dropped off at our identified projects for longer periods of intensive and hands-on assistance and support.

What can we offer Escapees?

The aim of the trip for 2014 is to film the nation’s perception of the last 20 years and their visions for the next generation. All daily experiences will need to be filmed, photographed and documented in order to produce a documentary, photographic journal and solution orientated written material for publication.

You will be travelling by road with team leaders and other interns. We have tried to keep the daily drive time to under two hours on average, but even on exceptional cases we will aim not be on the road for more than four hours on any given day. The courses that we have plotted are mostly off the beaten track, but there is no serious bush-whacking involved. The areas we travel through are safe and malaria-free.

Some of our research activities will include conservation, education and health related surveys. We will also be visiting community projects that we identified on our 2012 and 2013 expeditions, so you can look forward to encountering many different cultures. Of course, we will also take time out to enjoy nature and explore attractions like prehistoric rock paintings and animal sanctuaries. Our mission is a serious one, but we believe that fun makes work worthwhile.

We have a clear creative concept for the media we’d like to produce, but it is flexible enough for individual expression and your own fresh ideas.
