Start-up Loans Company, chaired by entrepreneur James Caan, is a Government-backed initiative tasked to stimulate enterprise amongst young people across the country. The Government has put aside more than £117.5 million over the next three years to provide start-up funding to entrepreneurs wanting to start a business, and is looking to help start 30,000 businesses and create an entire generation of entrepreneurs. 

The company is looking for an ambitious and talented Mentoring Manager to lead and implement the Company’s defined strategy and policy on pre and post loan support.

This is a rare and exciting opportunity to be involved in a high-profile organisation, which is making an enormous impact on start-up businesses in the UK.  This role is offers growth opportunities for the right candidate, and is a real spring board for future career prospects.

The main focus of the role will be working with our external delivery partners to ensure consistency and high quality business support, including one-to-one mentoring is delivered to all loan recipients. You will be able to work with a diverse range of organisations including local authorities, not for profit organisations and commercial businesses and ensure high quality deliver. The successful candidate will be confident working at all levels within an organisation and with the ability to negotiate and compel partners to deliver the results the Company requires. You will be expected to contribute to the overall support strategy and raise the standard delivered.

Key responsibilities

  • Reporting to the Head of Partnerships, your role will include:
  • Implementing SULCo’s support strategy
  • Building and implementing effective systems and processes for mentor management, training and support
  • Ensuring a consistent and minimum standard of support is maintained across the SULCo programme
  • Assessing delivery partners support performance and raising standards where required
  • Visiting delivery partners to assess the quality of support delivered
  • Ensuring partners comply with record keeping to enable SULC to measure the effectiveness of support
  • Attending sessions run by delivery partners to ensure best practice is being followed and reporting back on findings;
  • Collating and sharing best practice between partners; and
  • Undertaking other tasks as directed by the line manager

 

Knowledge and experience 

  • Strong understanding of the different types of business support available and their relevance to business success;
  • Knowledge of key business processes and aspects that affect the success of a business start up;
  • Previous experience at a senior level of managing a small business;
  • Well-developed analytical skills including the ability to assimilate complex information, identify and prioritise key issues;
  • Previous experience in delivering mentor programmes is desired but not essential.
  • Sound understanding of management accounts, cashflow statements and their impact on business; and
  • Strong IT skills, proficient in Microsoft Office especially in Excel.
