Background and job purpose

The Start-up Loans Company, chaired by entrepreneur James Caan, is a Government-backed initiative tasked to stimulate enterprise amongst young people across the country.

The Government has put aside over £112million 117million over the next three years to provide start-up funding to entrepreneurs wanting to start a business, and is looking to help start up to 30,000 businesses and create an entire generation of entrepreneurs. The company is looking for an ambitious and talented Finance Manger to join the team.

This is an exciting opportunity to get involved in a high-profile organisation. We are looking for an individual credit manager with a mix of finance and business experience.

You must possess a high attention to detail and have the have sound knowledge of credit assessment ability communicate effectively with different stakeholders of a company. The role will be very varied but the main focus of the role will be visiting our network of partners, who deliver the scheme, to assess the loan decisions that have been made and ensure their internal systems are robust.

Managing information and performance from external partners ensuring accuracy and precision together with assessing the viability of loan applications from young entrepreneurs. Working in this environment the successful candidate needs to be able to work autonomously and be results-driven with a demonstrable track record of self-generated success..  


Key responsibilities

  • Reporting to the Finance Business Partner Director, your role will include:
  • Assessing the viability of business plans and providing feedback to delivery partners;
  • Visiting  delivery partners to  conduct due diligence which includes to assessment of  loan decisions and system for making loan decisions is robust;
  • Facilitate roll out of existing quality assurance programme across scheme;
  • Assessment of business support provided by delivery partners;
  • Ensuring all required data and information is captured in order to monitor performance;;
  • Attending sessions run by delivery partners to ensure best practice is being followed and reporting back on findings
  • Collating and sharing best practice between partners; and
  • Undertaking other tasks as directed by the line manager


Knowledge and experience 

  • Strong experience of analysing financial data and key performance indicators;
  • Well-developed analytical skills including the ability to assimilate complex information, identify and prioritise key issues;
  • Appreciation of audit sampling and assessment of internal controls;
  • Sound understanding of management accounts and their impact on business;
  • Credit assessment experience gained from banking, investment or other industry  sector
  • Experience in assessing business plans
  • Proven understanding of commercial business gained through either SME  management or experience of running own business; 
  • Knowledge of key business processes and aspects that affect the success of a business start up;
  • Accountancy/business qualification and/or + 3 years relevant experience;Sound understanding of management accounts and their impact on business
  • Strong IT skills, proficient in Microsoft Office especially in Excel.
