Background and job purpose

The Start-up Loans Company, chaired by entrepreneur James Caan, is a Government-backed initiative tasked to stimulate enterprise amongst young people across the country.

The Government has put aside over £117.5million over the next three years to provide start-up funding to entrepreneurs wanting to start a business, and is looking to help start up to 30,000 businesses and create an entire generation of entrepreneurs.

We are looking for Lending Manager with a mix of finance and business experience. This is an exciting opportunity to get involved in a high-profile organisation and be part of something that is more than your regular corporate job. It’s a fast paced dynamic environment; you will find it challenging but gain incredible experience and exposure that is unrivalled anywhere else. 

 You must possess a high attention to detail and have sound knowledge of credit assessment. The main focus of the role will be managing information and performance from external partners, ensuring accuracy and precision together with assessing the viability of loan applications from young entrepreneurs. Working in this environment the successful candidate needs to be able to work autonomously and be results-driven with a demonstrable track record of self-generated success. 


Key responsibilities

 Reporting to the Head of Credit, your role will include: 

  • Assessing business plans and cash flow statements to assess the viability of start-up businesses across a number of different sectors;
  • Analyse the suitability of a loan and the ability to repay the loan;
  • Ensuring all required data and information is provided to make informed lending decisions;
  • Make final decision on whether or approve or decline loan applications;
  • Assist in delivering and maintaining a high standard of lending practices across the network of Delivery Partners;
  • Visiting  delivery partners  to assess loan decisions and attend sessions run by delivery partners to ensure best practice is being followed and reporting back on findings;
  • Collating and sharing best practice between partners; and
  • Undertaking other tasks as directed by the line manager.


Knowledge and experience 

  • Strong experience of analysing financial data and key performance indicators;
  • Well-developed analytical skills including the ability to assimilate complex information, identify and prioritise key issues;
  • Credit assessment experience gained from banking, investment or other industry  sector;
  • Proven understanding of commercial business gained through either SME management or experience of running own business; 
  • Understand the impact of economic and market conditions and how they impact on the viability of the business;
  • Knowledge of key business processes and aspects that affect the success of a business start up;
  • Accountancy/business qualification and/or + 3 years relevant experience;
  • Sound understanding of management accounts and their impact on business;
  • Strong IT skills, proficient in Microsoft Office especially Excel.
