Background and job purpose

The Start-up Loans Company is a Government-backed initiative tasked to stimulate enterprise amongst young people across the country. The Government has put aside over £140 million over the next three years to provide start-up funding to entrepreneurs wanting to start a business, and is looking to help start up to 30,000 businesses and create an entire generation of entrepreneurs.

We are looking for Default Manager with a mix of finance and collections experience. This is an exciting opportunity to get involved in a high-profile organisation and be part of something that is more than your regular corporate job. It’s a fast paced dynamic environment; you will find it challenging but gain incredible experience and exposure that is unrivalled anywhere else. 


Key responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of Credit, your role will include:

  • Assist in developing and maintaining an appropriate Collections and Recovery Policy;
  • Work closely with our network of Delivery Partners to ensure compliance with collections policy and credit lending guidelines;
  • Assist in training our network of Delivery Partners on best practice for improving loan repayment collections and on recovery processes;
  • Monitor monthly default and arrears rates and ensure they align to market standard and corporate objectives;
  • Interact with delivery partners to obtain additional credit information on delinquent accounts and prepare a report on highest risk accounts including recommendations for resolution;
  • Prepare the monthly collections report and other ad hoc reports for senior management; and
  • Undertake other tasks as directed by the line manager.


Knowledge and experience 

  • A minimum of three years experience in personal loan default management.
  • Proven track record of improving the level of collections and managing default rates within certain parameters.
  • Well-developed analytical skills including the ability to assimilate complex information, identify and prioritise key issues;
  • Credit assessment experience gained from banking, investment, or other industry sector experience highly desirable;
  • Excellent negotiation skills and knowledge of laws and related credit management practices in the UK;
  • Strong IT skills, proficient in Microsoft Office especially Excel.

  • Strong team player with excellent planning, organisational and communication skills, both written and verbal; and
  • Ability to operate in a dynamic working environment, handling multiple tasks and deadlines
