Tutudesk UK is a social enterprise that provides portable school desks to children in Sub Saharan Africa, where over 95 million children don't have the benefit of a classroom desk.
We work closely with the Head Office in South Africa and our patron is Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Tutudesk UK supports the South African organisation the Desmond Tutu Tutudesk Campaign Centre. The aim of the organisation is to provide portable school desks (known as Tutudesks) to children in Sub Saharan Africa where over 95 million school children don't have the benefit of a classroom desk (worldwide, it's estimated at over 400m). This affects the development of literacy and overall academic performance, as well as the ability to concentrate in class. To date over 1 million desks have been distributed.
Tutudesks are manufactured in South Africa and distribution is handled through partners such as World Vision. Funding for the desks mainly comes from sponsors who imprint the top of the desks with their messaging, using it as a unique way to engage with local communities. Beyond that, we're also looking at other channels such as charitable fundraising and private retail.
The Campaign's objective is to distribute a further 20 million desks to 20 million children by 2020.
