Virgin Start Up (VSU) is a newly created not-for-profit company wholly owned by Virgin Management Limited.  VSU’s remit is to deliver a high quality, coordinated and impactful national programme in support of the government’s Start-up Loans scheme.

In order to provide a full range of services to aspiring entrepreneurs nationwide, VSU will form partnerships with quality business support organisations around the country who will provide on-the-ground support. In addition, VSU will work closely with a number of Virgin Operating Companies (VOCs) such as Virgin Money, Virgin Trains, Virgin Media and others who will provide additional regional support and services – in particular mentoring, outreach and marketing at a local level. 

Reporting to the Project Director, the Loan Manager will be responsible for overall loan operations management and to assess loan applications, making loan recommendations and decisions jointly with our loan management partner. To apply for this role, you must have a strong combination of finance and business experience coupled with sound knowledge of credit assessment gained from banking or similar sector.

Reporting to: Project Director

Key responsibilities
include the following, other duties may be assigned:

 a)    Loan operations management

  • Work closely with our loan management partner to evaluate the existing loan management process, identify areas needing enhancement, develop and execute the improvement plan.
  • Work closely with our loan management partner and delivery partners to ensure quality service delivery throughout the consortium.
  • Monitor overall loan management performance, ensure agreed targets and KPIs are met. Resolve and escalate issues as appropriate. 
  • Monitor loan processing activities to ensure the timely processing of all loan applications up to loan closing, the maintenance of accurate loan files and the preparation of timely and accurate loan tracking reports and other required documentation.
  • Ensure loan operations compliance with all applicable regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Remain abreast of any changes in lending regulations relevant to loan processing and servicing and recommend changes in operating procedures and/or policies as appropriate.
  • Set up and attend regular loan operations meetings to discuss improvements and resolve issues.
  • Develop and implement staff training programs as necessary to ensure quality of service, compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate, collate and prepare all loan related reports with our partners as required. Ensure its accuracy, completeness and submit on time.
  • Work with our loan management partner to evaluate the existing loan management system, review the operational needs with all the relevant parties to develop and implement a system enhancement plan.
  • If it’s deemed as necessary to develop a new system, lead the new loan system development project through its whole cycle.
  • Act as liaison between VSU and the system developer. Act as VSU’s expert on the loan management system.
  • Visit our partners and take part in their loan assessment sessions in order to identify good practices and problem areas. Ensure lessons learnt are widely shared among the partners.

 b)    Loan application assessment:

  • Represent VSU at the Loan Assessment Committee with our loan management partner. Assess loan recommendations, business plans and cash flow statements to assess the viability of the applications in order to make informed lending decisions. 
  • Ensuring all required data and information is available and fully assessed and decisions recorded. 
  • Work as a team with our loan management partner to deliver and maintain a high standard of lending practices across the VSU consortium.
  • Undertaking other tasks as directed by the line manager.  

Knowledge and experience
  • University degree in business/finance/accountancy,
  • 3 year plus relevant experience.
  • Experience in managing people without direct line responsibility.
  • Ability to analyse financial data and key performance indicators; 
  • Well-developed analytical skills including the ability to assimilate complex information, identify and prioritise key issues; 
  • Credit assessment experience gained from banking, investment or other relevant sector.
  • Proven understanding of commercial business gained through either SME management or experience of running own business.
  • Understand the impact of economic and market conditions and how they impact on the viability of the business.
  • Knowledge of key business processes and aspects that affect the success of a business start up.
  • Sound understanding of management accounts and their impact on business.
  • Strong IT skills, proficient in Microsoft Office especially Excel.
  • Experience in system scoping and development.
