We need qualified accountants with experience of financial management to establish and/or develop financial systems for organisations in developing countries.

Roles are generally longer term, ranging from one to two years, but we also have occasional short term assignments for up to six months. They could be location in various countries including: Papua New Guinea, Tanzania or Sierra Leone.

We’re also interested in your ability to give technical advice and train your colleagues in financial best practice.

What does the role involve 
By helping develop clear and transparent financial systems, you’ll enable organisations that serve poor people to apply for government and institutional funding and manage their resources more effectively. An example role might include:

  • Identifying and assessing the financial management needs of a local government
  • Working with members of local government to improve budget preparation processes
  • Providing training and coaching to the current finance team
  • Establishing good practice in financial accounting procedures at local government
  • Advising a community organisation on all financial matters and developing effective financial management systems
  • Managing project funds
  • Training finance staff in the organisation on financial control and management systems
  • Working with finance staff to prepare annual financial and accounting reports
  • Developing and maintaining appropriate monitoring and evaluation processes.

Skills, qualifications and experience required
You’ll be a qualified financial manager with at least five years’ experience in managing reporting and finance systems, ideally with general management skills. You’ll also have excellent IT skills and good communication and interpersonal skills. Experience of grant writing and microfinance is desirable.

We’ll ask you to commit to 12-24 months to make a sustainable contribution to our development goals. In return, we’ll provide you with extensive training before your placement and our financial package includes a local salary, return flights, accommodation and insurance. When you return to your home country, we'll help you to resettle and many of our returned volunteers stay involved with us long after their placement ends.
